Do we know yet whether AMDs new 2013 cpu's will work in a FM2 motherboard.
Or will it be FM2+,

I am trying to determine which cpu to get for a friend with a viable uprade path!

Thanks all

Unsure as of yet, but for an upgrade path go with the 2011 Socket Intel CPU's.

If AMD, then you can try your luck with FM2 as it is still fairly new.

Most of the AM3 Boards could accommodate AM3+ CPU's with an update, depends on the size of the holes for the pins.

AM3+ Pins were thicker then AM3, so olny boards with thicker holes could do the upgrade, and only if the Manufacturer decided so..

looks like AM3+ and FM2 will be with us for at least 1 more CPU update

It's still up in the air about whether or not AM3+ will get another CPU.
There's been a few developments since September 2012.

I know the AM3+ socket is slightly different, but I'm not sure if the CPU's are, at the time I bought my CH IV AM3+ didn't exist, and it takes FX CPU's.

First you need to specify your friends budget.

This, I need to do this, this has been going on for a year and budget keeps changing. He really needs to decide!

Will come back once I know more, have taken into consideration what people have mentioned.

Essentially its tricky as he wont pay £100 for a dual core CPU, must have quad core or more and ideally wants to pay less. Wont pay for an I5 to expensive, he cannot understand that modern dual cores are not slow ! anyway this is why I ended up looking at AMD.

Really depends how similar the chips are. People are reporting that motherboards supporting only bulldozer chips also support piledriver even without a bios update.

Ok budget of £500 to include os, case etc

Uses photoshop is main priority. and light gaming (minecraft, maybe skyrim later but not fussed on high settings)

Should repost this in general hardware perhaps

Market segmentation, AMD need to keep board partners happy, so they can sell new motherboards. Exceptions were made to halo products like the CH IV. All in my opinion of course, but I can't imagine Asus et al being too happy about their AMD customer base not needing a new board yet again for a CPU upgrade.

IDK if FM2 will be around all that long (how much memory can bandwidth can they squeeze out of FM2?), maybe a new APU chipset at the end of the year I reckon
