The dwarves singing is a significant feature of the book. Would you rather they change the book because you don't like it?

I haven't read the book so I wouldn't know that. I would read the book (and LoTR for that matter) but try as I might, I cannot get into reading fiction of any kind.

For me the not looking like Dwarves thing also came from their clothes/armour. In the battle flashbacks to outside Moria and Erebor the armoured up Dwarves looked exactly how I'd picture them but Thorin's company just looked too Human and Thorin himself reminded me too much of Aragorn.

They have gone from a standing army to a bunch of wanderers, that would change they're clothing and equipment.

Just watched it. Really good film. At start I felt the double speed thing. Got used to it soon after. Only downside I would say is that the scenes in Bilbos house were way too long. Overall I give it a 8 out of 10

I watched it in normal 2D, wanted to watch in 3D HFR but the girlfriend didn't fancy it. One thing I found was that it didn't grip me, or give a reall tense or thrill feeling, maybe because they were dwarfs, not sure though.

I watched this back in December and really enjoyed it (I'm not a massive fan of the LotR films either). Yes, it's cheesey in places, but that added to the film IMO. I didnt feel the start dragged on; it set the scene for them going on this adventure

Probably worth mentioning that I havent read the book.

I thought it was a 6.5/10 compared to LOTR 9.5/10 to be honest.

Story-wise it is never going to come close - when you compare an overarching Evil vs Good for fate of the world vs a treasure hunt the latter is always going to pale in comparison. Also felt the Hobbit was far too kiddy-friendly, most of the telegraphed LOL-lines from the various dwarves, trolls, [insert comedy here] felt forced and flat and I started to get annoyed with Martin Freemans mannerisms - I get that's what he does and all but it started to wear a little thin.

Also the Goblin King bit was a massive missed opportunity and again virtually all of the humour fell flat to me.

Tbh my over-arching impression was a Disneyfied LOTR-Lite - enjoyed it but an OK movie rather than a great - maybe kids will enjoy it more though? :)

IIRC it's an age thing; dwarves live much longer than humans in Tolkien's world, and they get more dwarven-looking as they age.

Also how many of you remember that out of these dwarves, two of them have cameos as skeletons in FotR. :P

There are LOTS of things that annoyed me about the film. Not least bits being fabricated and shoved in at the expense of things that were actually in the story (Azog, Radagast, the fact that Galadriel fancies Gandalf, etc.). The dwarves singing though is part of the story and fairly intrinsic.

Looking forward to Beorn in the next one, and Smaug looked awesome.

Agree to all that, plus (and I can't remember specifics) some of the jokes seemed to be fairly "modern" in style (I'm thinking the troll scene here) and I felt they didn't fit with the theme of the film.

It seemed to take FOREVER to get going and even when it did, the film was practically over.

I also very much agree with your comment about the film being a "Disneyfied LOTR-Lite", it was certainly a lot lighter than the LOTR of which it is always going to be compared. I mentioned this to a friend who loved the Hobbit and he retorted saying "well The Hobbit isn't a dark book, it was intended to be a bedtime story" etc. Whilst I sympathise with this point, I don't think there was enough peril, or love for the characters which makes you more concerned in moments of danger.

I rated it 6/10, got a bit bored half way through and wondered how long it would be before it ended (now I know you should expect that from this franchise, but this took it a bit far). The best part of the whole thing were the scenes with Gollum, where there was some actual drama and fear, but they were fleeting at best.

I don't think Galadriel 'fancies' Gandalf - her being a leet elf from the First Age garners respect from him and as she knows Gandalf's true nature he's got her respect too. They can't really speak about her past because it's all off-limits as it's Silmarillion stuff but they're just trying to imply that there's shared history. I guess this comes out a bit as Gandalf having a bit of a thing for her, but then again again she IS supposed to be something of a goddessy-type-character - didn't Feanor get inspiration for the Silmarils from the light of the trees trapped in her hair? At least Gandalf doesn't turn into a blubbering mess like Gimli did!

Also speaking of LoTR - Play.com have the 15 disc blu ray set for £29.99 and free postage - just bought it!

Thanks for the tip! Been keeping an eye on this boxset and waiting for it to drop below its typical £40+

I know there's a few colouring complaints in some scenes, but I suspect these are minor in the scheme of things...

Ordered! :)
