BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Someone humour me..

Anyone who's read any of my posts in this section will apprenciate I'm not a novice when it comes to the internet but for the sake of my own sanity I want to double check something.

I've had Infinity for some 18 months and IDNet FTTC for over a year before that. I've always used my own router, Linksys, in conjunction with the Huawei modem and never had any real issues until today.

I've got sync, i.e the modem reports the line speed and stats but the router refuses to connect and just keeps telling "Could not get IP from PPPoE" (or words to that effect.. I'm typing this from a neighbours)

Sanjay from BT was less than helpful. He insists the username I've been using for 18 months is wrong. I've been using [email protected] but apparently it should be [email protected]. This is new to me. Sanjay also insisted I should be using a PPPoA connection not PPPoE. Again this is news to me.

Can someone who's replaced the HH please confirm what connection type and login details they're using just to put my mind at rest?

tl:dr - Got sync, no PPP. BT giving me confusing info. Nothing new there.
I use [email protected] with bt as the password. It is indeed PPPeE. BT don't use ATM at the home end so unsure why they would insist it's PPPoA. But you already know this.

Nope on all correspondence with Zen it has stated my expected speeds should be around 67/19. My order fulfillment came through a fee hours after it'd been done stating the same. Zen even had it down on their system as being 80/20 when I rang.

Need to phone back tomorrow as the order will be showing as fulfilled and get them to reprofile the line. Its not a big job is it?

It's easy to blame the Openreach engineer, even though he probably has zero control over the profile. :p

Engineer booked for 5th Feb between 1pm and 6pm :)

Luckily I work from Home on Tuesday's, so I don't have to take the time off! :)

Just an update.

Open Reach engineer turned up at 1000 hrs today, sorted out my Infinity and left. Connection has increased from 3MB/s down 0.5 MB/s up to 45 MB/s down 10MB/s up.

Fast.

Happy.

:D

Yeh true. Phoned Zen again so should be up and running on a new profile on Monday. Anyone know if a reboot is required or if it will just pick up the extra speed?

my cab has just had power installed to it, how long does it take for the site to take orders?

Days to weeks to months. It's impossible to say without knowing if all other work has been finished. Keep an eye on the wholesale checker.

@KIA

Is there a general order in which things are done with these FTTC cabinets? For example, do they run power first or last? Would a sensible order be something like:

Site & install FTTC cabinet
Run fibre to FTTC cabinet
Connect FTTC cabinet to PCP
Power FTTC cabinet

Question: are the FTTC cabinets fully populated with fibre trays from the get-go, or are they populated on demand?

My cabinet got power to it after a long delay around 14th December. I had the engineer booked to install it about 7 days later.

That order is pretty much spot on. I watched my cabinets progress as its just underneath my living room window. It appeared first, then they worked on it. Then lastly came the power, there was actually a big delay as its the power company who schedule the cabinet for connection.

As for the trays; The Engineer who visited me told me I was the first switch over on my cabinet. He also said some cabinets are a mess and others are cleaner and they do in fact run side by side, so based on that I'd be fairly sure they just rack up to demand and not from the get go.

Update, my connection speeds are getting worse.

there is a thread a day now on the exact same issue on BT forums which are all being ignored.

Can anyone offer me advice on how I should word my letter to BT to end my contract early as my service is unusable at peak times.

Ive had enough now and already cancelled my DD.

Just got BT infinity yesterday very happy with the speeds however disliking the traffic shaping so was thinking of getting a VPN.
Anyone know a good VPN for p2p?
