Southern drivers in the snow!

4wd was great in terms of practicality, the was no way to get stuck but the same limitation applied to braking and it was very apparent

Seems clear cut to me. Forwards = 15 minutes of messing around and being laughed at by the neighbours. Reverse = 15 seconds, no messing about at all. This is only a pathetic gradient like 1 in 50 or so.

If you have uni-directional tyres that could be your issue here. I have Toyos with a V tread. The V pattern digs in when going in reverse where as when travelling forwards the V pattern is suited more towards braking than grip when accelerating. I've done the same as you on failing to get up hills in the snow. I turn the car around and up I go in reverse :D

Why are people in massive 4x4s dawdling along at below 20mph causing tailbacks on A roads???? Even most B roads are okay for 30mph, just make sure you slow down for sharp turns if you are scared.

People can't even overtake because only one lane is clear of snow.

Had to do 20+ miles at 2.30 and it took ages. I also had to make sure I had a massive gap in front of me as everyone bunches up behind slow cars. At least if something happens in front of me, everyone behind would have plenty of time to brake.

Big 4x4s are very heavy for a start, they have more momentum due to the weight so are more at risk of sliding when turning or braking.

Double decker buses are going much faster than them, not afraid to get up to 30mph.

Unsurprisingly these 4x4s also have no vehicles in front of them for miles.

Never mind, they will be the ones laughing at you off the road in a ditch ;)

No, they are far more likely to cause accidents with these tailbacks. I saw one get pulled over by the police. They probably did it to give the 30 or so cars behind them some relief.

Just think about how slow 20mph on the speedo is, when on an A road.

i dont think you will ever fully grasp how stupid people are. clearly finance agreements dont have any form of minimum iq requirement

Complete idiot. Should be banned IMHO.

In some countries you can get points and a fine for not clearing your car of snow properly, particularly the roof.
Braking and having the snow come down over the screen is not a pleasant situation.
And neither is having snow sprayed at you from the car in front because the owner is too lazy to brush it off.

I spent 10 mins brushing my car last week before I set off for work for this very reason.

A sensible speed when there is snow and ice on the road. You are the one which sounds like an idiot.

I guess the vast majority of drivers are stupid then.

A sensible speed is where you have traction and are leaving sensible gaps.

Arbitrarily limiting yourself to 15-20mph is not sensible.

I've spent most of today driving on quite rural roads, in a RWD roadster on decent summer tyres and have had pretty much no dramas at all (apart from some occasional twitchiness). Didn't get stuck, didn't end up in a fireball, arrived everywhere I needed to be facing the right way. Quite surprised, I thought I'd be the first to get stranded.

I am sure that some people think that 4x4 makes you invulnerable in the snow. I have one and it is equally slippy when stopping etc.

Wish they would get off my butt.

Have to agree - had several 4x4 drivers leaving far too small a gap behind me today.
