Amazed you haven't used a 3970x in the default specification to harness the extra "premium" 200MHz.

Or am I missing something.

I could actually buy a pretty decent car for that money!!!......doesnt stop me wanting it though :O

It has been overclocked so it doesn't really matter. Just because the 3970X is clocked 200MHz faster at stock, doesn't mean you'll get that extra 200Mhz on top of the max stable overclock.

2GB of VRAM is going to be a massive limiting factor with the GPU grunt which 4 680s bring....

I'm sorry but that is rubbish. VRam makes a tiny difference to performance at extremely high resolutions with huge textures. You are talking 1-2FPS if that, most games demand faster GPUs way before they need more VRam.

This system is a beast and the GPU grunt is more than enough for any game.

No it's not rubbish. I've gamed at 5760*1080 so I'm fully tuned in to what happens when you actually run out of VRAM. By saying you'll lose 1-2 FPS shows that you aren't aware of what happens. Basically you stutter to single digit/zero FPS.

Anyway, the point is more that with the considerable raw GPU power that 4*GTX680s offer you will end up in a situation where you have the raw power to push maximum settings in a game but not the physical VRAM amount to back it up. MSAA taxes the VRAM (e.g. in BF3 MSAA 4x dumps 400MB+ into the VRAM) and high resolution textures also dump into the VRAM.

This applies at single screen resolutions of 2560*1440 and above (in certain games) and at 5760*1080 and above as well. 4 GPUs gives you a large raw GPU power amount but not the VRAM to back it up.

Be honest... Someone at OcUK got bored... And wanted to build a computer with the best of everything, using components from the store room didn't they? :D

...

Or is it just me who would do that? :p

Yes I understand that, I just would have imagined OCer's to have pick it, well to bag a bit more profit(?) and to the have the most expensive/highest performing CPU currently out there. As there are always some people that go onto components and pick the most expensive as they believe it to be the best even if they don't require it (braggers rights I suppose).
