HMV Finally closing down for good?

Final stages of capitalism.

Take for example a simple game of Monopoly, it starts off competitive/fair but eventually someone owns most of the board/wealth and dominates the game, puts all of the other players out of business & any new players can't even get a foothold without going bankrupt. Interesting times. ;)

Difference being in Monopoly all the competitors are competing in the same market (property).

What you learn from the game of Monopoly is why we have a Monopolies commission and laws/regulations in place to prevent them. Tesco does not have a monopoly because the likes of Sainsbury, Asda, Waitrose, M&S, Lidl, Iceland etc etc compete with them. In fact the supermarket market is one of the most competitive around.

I'd say Apple have more to fear from anti-monopoly legislation than Tesco do. For a start, Tesco don't demand I eat their food with Tesco bought knives & forks off Tesco branded plates (a metaphor of Apple's business model).

Yet more Tesco stores, the most boring thing in the high street. Very useful but they are all so close together it's ridiculous. We have about 7 within a square mile in the city centre now. Are people really THAT lazy that there is enough business for 7 identical Tesco stores, none of which are more than 3-4 minues walk from another?

Surely it makes sense to have all the stores yours and to get by, than to have a competitor take the place?

7 stores means it'd be very hard for another competitor to pentrate that micro market.

Not really, unless every building in a city centre is a Tesco then there will always be space somewhere for Sainsburys or Morrisons to launch a similar store?

Good news for anyone that had ordered and received dispatch emails from HMV online just before the administration. Items were held by the courier but according to Deloitte, had been released and dispatched on Thursday 24th January.

JAzz

While continuing the fight in the big stores they are also trying to mop up the business of the small convenience stores as well. Quite sad really for the small shop owners.

Not really. I'd bet a lot of the small convenience shop owners have had experience of knocking out competitors in the past (it's certainly happened in my area). Karma that's all.

OT: Does anyone think this is history repeating itself?

Tesco riding the crest of the wave, buying up shops and having massive shops too boot, that in years to come they could be the next GAME/HMV to fall with there huge retail estate?

They sell food (mainly), until someone can come up with an alternative solution that can beat Tesco on price or service it's unlikely they'll ever struggle.

But on a side note, as I mention earlier I laugh when people mention Tesco forgetting that whilst they may be a big company, the market they compete in is one of the most competitive out there. They are as far removed from being a Monopoly in an sense of the word as you can be.

Compare that though to say washing machine power, where there are only two major players in the market. Yet people almost always use Tesco as an example of a company that is trying to dominate it's market.
