Microsoft Blaming PC Firms For WIn 8 Poor Sales.

Being a late player I think they're going to need to sacrifice licence profit to drop device prices a lot.

What they actually need to do in my opinion is offer a version of Windows RT without Office at reduced cost, and get them into mobile phone shops competing on the front line. The Nokia RT tablet being a perfect example. Just offer a SKU with Office for those who want it.

They're also apparently making a reference windows phone 8 at $200 or below for retail.
To show oems how to produce low end.
They are showing signs, but this really should off all been thought of and done before launch.

RT is where the numbers should have been. If they can't get traction there then I can't see it happening with surface pro which I see as an over priced over spec'd tablet or under spec'd ultra book, the latter being its more realistic market.

I want a full windows tablet for my business, but as yet, there is not really anything decent enough, cheap enough for now. It needs to run native windows programs including office. Nothing else can offer that.

I'm going to buy the new nokia/MS Lumia 620. As long as its priced around £200. Brother keeps telling me just buy a Samsung S2/3. Maybe its my age, the only selling point on his phone - he has Robocop from Data East in all its glory.

Microsoft have to be commended surely for the way in which they've taken on the mobile market.
Also, the xbox - Halo Combat Evolved sold that console. It was a fantastic game. One memory from that year sticks in my mind forever, still haunts. But Halo was a welcome distraction.
They (MS) need to get the new xbox to play Virtual Reality games surely

I just re-read the article because I wanted to see where the 'poor sales' quote came from but as it turns out it's nowhere to be found.

I think the OP just made it up.

Windows licenses are reported to cost OEM's $85 so where's the profit in low end devices? and even if there is a tiny bit of profit there is nothing to stop MS undercutting them all.

OEM's aren't stupid, they are not there to promote Microsoft's products at their own detriment. Now that Microsoft have entered the arena they really need to shut up and not rely on partners, partners aren't going to compete against Microsoft when MS have such considerable advantages.

It's not going to be 85 for windows phone seeing as lumia 620 and htc 8s are very cheap.
Even if you are talking about tablets it's going to be cheaper than that, that's same price as retail,

What they need to do for windows 8 mobile and RT is drop the cost of licensing to 0. And make their money from the app market.

At the moment the price of the devices is for too high for the specifications you are getting so people are looking elsewhere.

The RT tablet is £400 ish, and is no better bar a fancy case than £150-£200 android tablets which they are competing against. The RT should have been £299 from the start. It may have sold well then.

Just my view anyway.

The tablets are priced a tad high, but the phones seem perfectly fine. Very very feature rich.

Giving your product away and hoping to claw money back through app sales just won't work.

Also, I'm guessing you've never used a Surface if you're comparing it to a £150 tablet. It's competing with the iPad.

That's a bit of a stupid statement, other than the Metro UI Windows 8 is a better o/s than Windows 7

People hate change, even if its for the better. I have not used Win8, as I see no need to upgrade for what I do (The first time I have not upgraded to the latest OS since XP) and use it for.

It was the same with XP -> Vista. Despite the fact that Vista was far far better than XP.

Wow - just wow! Without being drawn in by the rather trite sniping at Microsoft, surely it's obvious that the holy grail of the current trend is convergence - and there is no doubt that Microsoft are spot on with their roadmap - Who wants an App that apes the functionality of a desktop suite, when you can have the desktop suite, on all your devices! (And let's face it - the hardware is pretty much there!)

While I'm not a fan of the RT model (I reeeeeally wish I could afford a Surface Pro) - it is a necessary step in bridging the divide between Phone and Desktop and will help build brand awareness - whether you're a fan of Metro or not, over the next couple of years we will all get used to it and having a phone, a tablet, and a PC that all look and act the same can only be a good thing. Those of us that like to tinker, will still tinker, but for the rest they will be able to pick up any device, handheld or desktop and complete their tasks without having to wrestle with different styles and setups.

I don't think so. Personally XP was better than Vista and still is. Why are people forgetting about businesses. They can't adapt over night it takes careful planning and testing before they can move.

Of course it was. It had far better memory management, a far superior UI and the only major let down was drivers. Though that was not a vista issue, that was the manufacturers.

I love the UI on my Windows Phone, and I have played with the RT tablets in the shops and its exactly the same interface. I have yet to play with win8 desktops. I do have a touch screen monitor in my unit, but I cannot see me wiping the entire thing (which has dozens and dozens of programs on it) plus, I do not use the touch screen anyway!
