Terminator 5

IMO terminator films shouldn't be "bright" & colourful, they should have that dark, gritty feel like T1 and T4. The "bright and colourful" thing works with typical hollywood action films like the avengers & marvel films etc. but not the terminator series, gives the feeling that it is aimed towards kids and is one of the reasons why T3 was so poor imo.

I thought the "cyborg" idea for T4 was pretty good, however, again time travel plot hole and all with it, it was perhaps a bit too overpowered and advanced for that time, able to hold its own against the T800, which in theory should be a far more advanced unit.

Whilst I liked T4, they really should have taken a different direction with it.

I honestly didn't mind T4, I liked the brief scenes with the T600. I like the fact they wern't anything special, but still effective to some degree. E.g. in the clip below he makes a lot of mess wrecking the world with his gatling gun, but! He gets outsmarted. Realistically though, how Reis catches the T600 out would take a lot of planning a shear man power. So in that respect, its pretty hummm considering its him and another child as two of few survivors left.

On the other hand, I totally agree with the above. The film could have been made a lot grittier. E.g getting rid of the attack drones and that stupid wheel thing. I liked the idea of the ending at the Skynet facility. But that could have been done better too.

The problem with most modern films is the over reliance on CGI and that would ultimately spoil any film based after Judgement Day. :(

Just look at that clip of T2. The T-800 looks real, it crushes a skull beneath it's feet, the awkward robotic movements... It looks fantastic to this very day!

Using actual props, scale models etc.. is far more effective than today's CGI laden trash.

Yes. Look at the original 'The Thing' and look at the prequel. Which one has the magic?

This, this, this :)

When T4 came out, I genuinely expected to see the first few minutes of T2... but expanded over the course of 2 hours. I would have bloody loved that. The opening for T2 is one of my all time favourite movie scenes, everything about it is just 'quintessential sci-fi'.

I was so very disappointed with T4... no laser guns, for starters!

+1

Bale was awful in it. It felt that he merely turned up for the pay-cheque (which is very unlike him, given that he likes to give his all, for every role he plays). It was as if he came off the set of Batman and went straight onto T4 - Batman gruff voice and all.

I had really high hopes after hearing the infamous Bale rant, sounded as if he was pretty serious about it. Such a shame.

T4 was grim/dark and gritty, so perhaps that was more your type of movie.

For me, T2 was the best of all Terminator movies.
And that was bright and cheerful.
The only dark and gritty parts of that movie were the opening cut scene (ie. the scene from the future) and also the nuclear bomb dream sequence, when S.Connor gets killed.

I felt that T3 was the logical sequel (it used the same style as T2 - lots of SFX, humour, bright scenes, low body count, etc) but many fans didnt like it. Perhaps times had changed and audiences wanted to see something different?

T4 was perhaps a bit too dark & gritty but then again it was set in a time where man kind was pretty much wiped out and you had killing machines hunting down any survivors :p I felt that it was the closest to T1 in terms of that.

T2 was good, not too much humour and the humour was actually good, bit brighter than T1, but it wasn't overdone to ruin it and the rest of T2 was excellent any way especially considering when it was released.

T3 just took it a step too far with the "bright" colourful entertainment, it just felt like a typical hollywood kids film, the humour (talk to the hand, the sunglasses etc. which again led to the film feeling like it was for kids), the guy playing JC was the main thing that ruined it and generally just a terrible script. The only good thing about it was the special effects and the fight scenes between the 2 terminators.

Don't get me wrong, I love bright colourful films like the avengers and all the other marvel films etc. but that is because they suit it better, it just doesn't work with other films i.e. imagine what the batman films would have been like if they were all bright and cheerful, they would not have been as highly rated or as good imho.

There is so much that they could have done better with T3 and T4. They should have dropped the whole send back a baddy and protector after T2.

I thought the main problems were the casting and script. If Nick Stahl had played the physically unimposing hero as well as Michael Biehn did thing would have been a lot better.

Same with Clare Danes. She was supposed to be the strong female character to replace Linda Hamilton but completely failed to live up to her predecessor.

They were badly cast and had a crappy script to work with, so all that was really left were the action sequences and comedy (which I quite liked).

Joel Schumacher already proved that ;)
Thank god he made The Lost Boys or he'd be on my assassination list...

Agree with everything else you said :)

people have mentioned the "talk to the hand" and sunglasses in T3 but I have not seen the bit mentioned where Arnie gets re-programmed by the chick, walks like a retard and tells J.C "I am all evils now, ruuun away". I hated that part and it summed up the movie for me - ways I used to play as a kid. Only slightly redeemed when he mashes up the car bonnet, but that looks too fake aswell.

OT: Id rather have a T5 film to watch than no T5, even if it is gash

True! :o The one with George Clooney was beyond awful, even the great Arnie couldn't save it :(

Lost boys was very good and I liked phone booth :p

Claire Danes was pretty tough, I'd say.
And remember, toughness takes years to acquire.
The more you are subjected to (eg. torture, hard decisions, blood, killing, harsh living conditions, etc), the harder/tougher/desensitised you become. Remember, she was a vet - a caring person, who did not want to see harm come to anyone or thing. She'd have a good 10-20 years, to become gradually tougher. The same goes for Nick Stahl (wimpy J.Connor).

This, I agree with.
T3 is merely a T2 remix. It worked when T2 was a remix of T1, but perhaps T3 was one time, too many.

I still thought T3 was an enjoyable movie.

I think they should've given John Connor a greater part in T4 and used a different actor (as Bale seemed to be merely going through the motions in that movie). Sam Worthington and the character he was portraying was very interesting, though.

BTW, what year is T5 set to be released or is it still up in the air at the moment? Due to his age, surely Arnie needs to get this done as quickly as possible?

T4 was an ok movie if you look at it individually. It was a high budget movie and it had a lot of good effects. But in the context of the original terminators (1 and 2) I was disappointed. They completely cheated by making it in the middle of no where and in a time when there was hardly any humans left. That way they could get around having to do effects in a city or where the resistance was like the end of 1 and 2. It didnt show any cities hit by nukes, re 2 and end of 3. It just seemed like a completely different story that only took one or two aspects from the original story.

TBH, I am actually not too concerned about Arnold's age/looks as the CGI these days is very good for that sort of stuff i.e. Benjamin Button, Joseph Gordon-Levitt in looper, Guy Pearce in Prometheus etc. and the Arnie/T800 in T4 was very well done I thought, they just took a body builder who had a similar build to Arnold and then the CGI'd Arnold's face on top.
