Supplements the debate/discussion thread

That is very definition of cloak and dagger. The issue* exists, but nobody wants to talk about it. They prefer to brush it under the carpet and pretend the issue does not exist. Nobody wants or is permitted to openly talk about the subject, which is integral to sports supplementation.

*the issue being steroids.

However, the forums are run by OCUK and they make the rules, so I guess we must follow those rules.

Point taken.

Moving back onto the topic of supplements....

HMB: I've been using this stuff for about 2 months. I'm not sure if it makes any difference to my power or physique, but it certainly helps me sleep deeper. No question about it. Years ago, I tried Nytol to help regulate my sleep and that stuff was useless. I pulled an all-nighter (studying for exam next day) and completely forgot I took some. That was the last time I took that useless tablet. HMB is a great sleeping aid.

L Glutamine powder: I am currently trying this out. I have been on it continuously for about 2 months. I'm undecided about this. There was a thread made by someone who suggests taking purely L-Glutamine in the mornings, then not eating for at least 45 minutes. Apparently, this makes a person look better (better skin, etc). So I've been dosing as per his guide lines for the last week or so. I will let you know how I get on.

Whey protein: of course, this is a no-brainer.

Superpump 250 Max: I've tried out many pre-workout supps and this works the best, for me. It increases my heart-rate and makes me alter (improved focus). It also improves my physical performance.

ECA stack: when cutting, this is without doubt, the best stack I have used. The rest just don't work. This stack kills your hunger. It gives you a physical and psychological boost, allowing you to train at high intensity for extended periods of time. Ephedrine is banned by most anti-doping authorities and should not be overdosed on. I've been using this stuff for the last 10 years during my cutting phase with no problems (though I am careful on dosage).

Fine milled oats: I've had these in my protein shake and they mix well.
I have mixed feelings about oat supplements. If you are desperately trying to pack on mass at any cost (or involved in endurance sports), I'd certainly use this supplement, but for most purposes I can't see why I would use an oat supplement, vs "normal" food.
Freefaller gave me a good reply earlier on this thread regarding the benefits of oats. I would reply and state that most of what he stated can be achieved by a slice of bread. Furthermore, by adding some butter and tuna to the bread, you can easily turn that into a filling/tasty/healthy snack. You can't do this with the oat supplement.

Summary
IMO, caffeine is arguably the the best supplement for exercise. Pre-workout supps normally contain caffeine and some form of creatine.
Caffiene is also used in ECA stacks to remove fat from the body.
Whey protein is also a great supplement.

I feel that other supplements offer poor value for money, given the benefits they bring to the table. I'd rather spend the money on (real) food.

The above are my opinions of taking supplements for many years. I hope I haven't offended anybody. ;)

Steroids for personal use I have no issues with, but then you get a lot of people who say they're "not on them" who are, and have won things (i.e. Lance "I'm a scapegoat" Armstrong) who are despicable as they're playing victim despite cheating.

Now in a sport like professional bodybuilding where everyone is on the same page - sure, at least everyone knows they're in the same boat.

It's the naivety of people who think actors for example, get jacked without them - of course they use them, but they do not glamourise them (nor should they) because it will never be the same for the public, all these guys have private doctors monitoring their blood levels, health, and offering them certified medical supplies rather than backstreet made in Thailand dodgy crap. They're closely monitored - and have the time to workout 2x a day and eat the best foods.

Except ECAs are in a grey area too.... :/

Anyway, back onto the more salient points of this thread.

Caffeine has always been agreed to be a good boost pre work out.

Creatine is one of the most researched and accepted supplement out there - it's effectiveness varies depending on diet, exercise and how it is taken/stacked, cycled.

I do agree with you on the food > supplements - however, supplements have their place if you do eat a poor diet, or if you're not able to get your diet in check owing to whatever circumstances you are going through, or if you need to boost your diet / workout / recovery if it falls short somewhere. :)

HMB works even better stacked with creatine. It's an active metabolite within leucine which is vital for protein synthesis - and is really used for increasing LBM. I guess that's possibly why your sleep has improved - but it's not the biggest sell IMO for such a supplement.

Bread is actually pretty poor nutritionally speaking - especially the stuff you buy in the shops - it's highly processed, and sugar content is high.

Oats aren't a supplement, they are a food. :p

Whey protein doesn't "do" anything - it just provides your body with more protein. ;)

Why the first time in a long time? Want a pat on the back for being a lazy git for X amount of time and then coming in here and boasting about it? Sure if your some new kid getting into it i got no issue with you, but you're making out like you are/have been some gym aficionado who for reasons unknown had to stop going to the gym. Well good on you, you are exactly the same as everyone else in the world who laconically decide as and when they want to go to the gym.

Im sure you will retort with fantastic excuses about your exploits and the reasoning why you havent been hitting the iron. They may even be understandable and acceptable. But dont come in boasting, come tell us when you are setting the world alight with new records (even if they dont compete with others) come to us when youve been hitting it hard and consistently and have something to really be proud of.

Im glad you feel good after a gym sesh, but dont we all, i wont sugar coat it or glorify it. Doing so would only add to the majority of whats wrong with most lifters.

Ooooh my goodness.

I was a big gym goer 3 years ago, then lived in greece, lost it all, spent a lot of money, came back to uni, skint ever since, haven't been to the gym seriously since then.

Enjoying it again :)

Currently 11stone, target of 11st 10lbs

He might have good reasons though. Although I'm not suggesting a pink sympathetic response to some pussy who dodged the gym! Hardcore motivation all the way, :p

4p, get to the gym you weed ass mofo, and this time stay there!

:) Training with a bloke who's off the army in the summer so its going well (and hard) haha.

p.s. the protein shakes are decent from theproteinworks

I just used that code to buy 5kg unflavoured whey. 5kg of oats and 1kg of creapure (gonna give it a go and see if I notice anything)

Cost about 55 quid not bad!

Probably the new system they have. Price beater not matching stuff either for me.
MyProtein seem to be going out of their way to lose customers. They need to stop wasting money on expensive adverts and get the basics sorted out. If I was a first time customer I wouldn't return.

Their website is awful, really bad. It never remembers anything, I'll be shopping, come back and the cart has emptied itself! I was on it yesterday and it logged me out inbetween putting items in and on top of that cleared everything, as if I'd cleared the browser history and cookies. Then wouldn't let me log in saying my password was wrong.
The pricematcher no longer works, I've sent them several requests since last week and now they've just cleared it of every item.
They are constantly out of stock, especially when offers are on.
Delivery times are very hit and miss. My last order came in 8 seperate deliveries, a huge box has a single empty plastic tub... Which is a pain when they keep leaving all these boxes with different neighbours!
Customer service is about the worst I've come across, what there is of it anyway.

Just tried to use the MP code listed above and said it wasn't applicable to my order, anyone got any ideas? No bundles included.

another thing that haxx me off with MP...is they constantly advertise Free postage for UK mainland delivery....but east of scotland isnt part of the UK mainland..WTF?? Ive complained about it many times to customer services...still the same.
Im still buying from them as Ive used them for years now...but the website is pooor now.

Buy on get one have price on 1kg bags of 100% whey from TPW code 'WHEY100'

Ref code: DP2602 if your using hem for the first time and pick yourselfs up some free protein :)

Every time I order from MP, my stuff comes within a couple of days in one delivery. The only time they've got something wrong was forgetting to include a freebie but I emailed them and they sent it next day. Guess it must be location dependent or something.

Annoyingly they had flavored BCAAs at a very cheap price - they were reduced + the 25% off however they have changed the prices.

should have stuck my order through earlier.

Still waiting on MP sorting out a damaged delivery i had from Hermes - the resend got lost. This time i paid for DPD

That was what i thought, but compare it to 2.5kg of myprotein's impact whey (80%?) which is £31.99, you can get 2kg of this 100% whey from TPW for £33 which is not actually that bad for value :) i might get some if i like there strawberry cream flavour (have some 80% of theirs to try)
