Do i need a tv license?

One thing you can do though is watch Live TV through the BBC site, which is quite stupid as all you need to do is tick a box and it lets you. Would be better if they linked an account with your TV license so people don't just tick the box.

Just looked at the tv licence web site thats a huge loop hole I wonder how many people say they only use on demand I mean how do they actually check you are telling the truth?

I know loads of people who don't pay tv license and nothing ever happens to them. The tv man could come to your house but he can't enter.

Yep if you watch on demand they cant do any thing its only LIVE broadcastings.

BUT you may need to prove that you only watch on demand.

I mean if there is an ariea pluged in lets be honest they will think yeah right mate your lieing so need to prove it tbh.

And how will they prove he's watching live tv?

To be perfectly honest, I'd rather not give my money to peadophile protectors.

I quote (Communications Act 2003 - Part 4).

Licence required for use of TV receiver

(1)A television receiver must not be installed or used unless the installation and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence under this Part.
(2)A person who installs or uses a television receiver in contravention of subsection (1) is guilty of an offence.

368 Meanings of “television receiver” and “use”

(1)In this Part “television receiver” means any apparatus of a description specified in regulations made by the Secretary of State setting out the descriptions of apparatus that are to be television receivers for the purposes of this Part.
(2)Regulations under this section defining a television receiver may provide for references to such a receiver to include references to software used in association with apparatus.
(3)References in this Part to using a television receiver are references to using it for receiving television programmes.
(4)The power to make regulations under this section defining a television receiver includes power to modify subsection (3)

Therefore, if the TV has been installed, which it has, and it has a receiver capable of receiving a live TV feed, which it does, then an offence has been comitted.

The law states installed OR used. Not just used.

Removal of the ariel would probably be the best bet in your case OP. Then you can say it is not capable of receiving a live feed and is no longer "installed".

It's a civil law. That's the key.

Just ignore the letters and when they knock on the door. Just stare at him while he asks if you just moved in and loads of questions. Don't say anything, let him ramble on. Then when he stops. Ask him for ID, his name and surname, act as if you want to write it down. Then ask for his home address because you want to come around the following night and search his house for any infringing material.

If you let them know that you don't have a tv they will actually increase harassment not decrease.

Another one that works, is look out the window if it looks like tv license, wait a few mins until they walk down the street, then run after them in to the street and ask them for their name and home address. scares the *** out of em. :D

I was in exactly the same position as the op, the tv license people came around seen that the tv was not programmed or hooked up to an aerial and that I only used it for ps3 etc and they confirmed I did not need a license.

You are wrong, even the tv website will tell you, you are wrong. You are misinterpreting the law. The important bit is "and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence under this Part."

The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and Blu-ray/DVD/VHS recorders.
You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch ‘catch up’ services like BBC iPlayer or 4oD.

My housemate let them in a few years ago to confirm a when i was still house sharing but that was only the start, when my house mate gave them details and confirmed we don't have a tv. then we got a new tv license guy coming around at least 1 month for the next few years to search our house for a tv. Even though we had confirmed that we don't have one.

Best thing to do is neither confirm nor deny that you have a tv and refuse to answer any questions or supply any information. If they your name from a previous license then you might get threatened to go to court. But if you are not watching TV then you are not doing any thing wrong.

Thanks guys, my girlfriend opened the letter and as soon as she read it she was pretty much about to get her purse out and pay, the way it looks and the way its worded makes it look like you are being prosecuted or breaking the law, pretty disgusting in my opinion, god knows how they get away with such bullish behavior! but it works, as she was jut about to pay!

They get away with it as its a government endorsed official tax. No private company would ever get away with it.
And I agree it's bullying and dispicable.

legally if you watch iplayer or catchup services then you still need a tv license. Even if you Don't have a tv but watch iplayer website they still say you have to have a tv license. There is a video on youtube of the tv inspector guy going through the browser history of someone who let him in.

Although the legislation does not mention i player bbc have just added that in, considering it is legalized theft to begin with it is not that surprising. I am surprised they didn't find a way to tax everyone even if they don't watch tv. considering that is the way the rest of socialism an taxation works, it is kind of unique for it be only required if you watch tv.

The letters hah, i have had about 200 over the years, no exaggeration, i just put them in the bin right away, don't even open them anymore.

BIG BOLD RED LETTERS:

You are hereby given office notice: Your property is now under investigation.

and then at the bottom f the letter left hand side circled in a big red line £1000 fine plus legal costs

Interesting. With new streaming services etc the law seriously needs updating. It's out of date. We used to have VM but cancelled the tv and just pay phone/broadband. So I've removed the cable and vm box but there is an old sat dish on the front of the house. Might be an idea to remove this I suppose
