Steam gets almost all the PC games sales now..How do you feel about this ??

So you used to get your games through piracy?

Lets look at the comment I made:

Steam automated ALL of that which for myself (Call me lazy) made sense and made piracy redundant.

That does not mean I had to partake in it to make it redundant.

For someone who is nearly 45, you should know how to read and understand other peoples posts and troll properly by now.

Steam don't get any where near all of the PC games sales from my house, not even a quarter. It's generally too expensive, and by the time their infamous sales have a game in it I may buy I will of already bought it cheaper elsewhere soon after release.

Having said that, if I buy a 'steamworks' game from somewhere other than steam I would imagine that Steam still turn a profit from that. The devs will most likely be paying Steam for their services.

I got steam when I bought a hard copy of the orange box way back when. I hated steam it hindered me to play the game I wanted to, it looked ugly, I had no idea how to really use it and it was slow and it crashed a lot.

Now I still have steam, it’s still ugly in my opinion :p but I have loads of games on it, its simple to use. I can buy a game with two clicks. They have sales every so often so I can get games really cheap.

That is progress. So how do I feel about steam getting almost all the PC sales ? Nothing what so ever. Valve invested in a product and over the course of time they made it better, quicker got more games on it. They invested their time and energy into building this client. So good for them it is a success.

Anyhow, when is GTA IV going back on Steam sale, I want GTA IV in my steam library lol

I actually purchased LA Noire some months back on another website and got a code by email to register on Steam, in fact looking over my steam purchase history, quite a few of my games are purchased elsewhere but register on Steam.

I do buy quite a few games on Steam when on sale... Steam is excellent for keeping a track of my games, friends, collection of screenshots, online chat about new games, gaming news about patches and DLC, all in all Steam has done a great deal for PC Gamers.

I don't know of any other system where I can take my laptop with me, have ALL my games with me, and play any game I want anywhere all patched and ready to go. Its so easy, its made PC gaming a pleasure for me.

I can even add none steam games to library and add a custom banner and have this fired up with Steam overlay.. Big picture mode for large screen gaming, greenlght to see up and coming indie games...

Anyhow, when is GTA IV going up on sale again??? lol no all joking, I think Steam is very good and made my life so much easier.

I'd say most of what needs to be said has been.

Unless physical media has some sort of sentimental meaning to me, I don't want it. It's outdated and unnecessary.

Although I'm not a supreme Steam fanboy, Valve's overall mantra is superb and I'm happy to help/let them proceed as they are, as I trust them.

This!

I don't see with the current hdd prices and internet speeds, why anyone would still want to mess around with cd's/dvd's, it's a plain hassle...

If your looking at buying a newly released game or something high profile like Skyrim or COD then the prices are so high its crazy.
When they have a winter or summer sale though its a different matter. :D

If only companies like Microsoft or EA could bring out a realistic, competitive alternative.

Oh well.
FWIW I seem to remember (and I could be wrong) Valve take a 30% cut for listing on Steam, they tend to charge full "RRP" for new releases and it's pretty much impossible to either sell the game second hand or return it.

I have games on steam but as I mentioned elsewhere I'm getting increasingly concerned about their near monopoly and behaviour. When Microsoft launched Windows 8 with a digital distribution "online store" which could have been a competitor for games distribution Gabe slammed it http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Gabe-Newell-Windows-8-Catastrophe-OEMs-Post-Touch,16432.html and dismissed PC gaming as having no future seeing the market moving to a "steam box" in the living room, tablets and moved into promoting Linux.

Now he may or may not be right about the future but the trash talk when what could be a competing distribution platform appears concerns me.

In particular if you take into consideration it seems pretty much impossible to sell the game second hand / trade it in when you're done with it. If you normally get £10 for a £40 game that's an almost extra 25% increase in cost (excuse any ropey maths, you know what I mean ;) )

The publisher/developer ultimately set the prices.

The percentage is not in any way fixed and can vary depending on the title or what is negotiated.
