Motorola release first new phones since Google takeover

Could always turn to the bay - quite a few on there! Also some continental retailers have them, and it works out ok when you convert € to £.

RAZR i gets JB "Q1 2013" apparently... so March 31st then :p

https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c

This is what's annoying about Moto; look at the original RAZR for Europe - "Will be upgraded to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) for select countries and carriers". Why not just roll it out everywhere, at the same time (and as soon as possible!)??

Must be so much red tape at that firm. Hope Google sort them out!

The JB update (4.1.2) is finally arriving for the RAZR i now:

Not impressed at all, the software is more or less stock android therefore they wouldn't have had to spend as long optimising it like what HTC and Samsung need to do and since motorola are pretty much in bed with google and on top of that considering Motorola don't support many devices at all (think they are only providing support ot the new RAZR devices?), they could have had this update out a lot sooner.

You have to remember the very long production process of a mobile device manufacturer like Motorola. Google has had very little impact on any of the current Motorola phones, these phones are very much still Motorola phones and not Googlerola phones.

Googlerola phones are expected later this year, I am very excited to see what is produced! The strongly rumoured Google X phones which will replace the Nexus line will be most interesting.

Yeah but you would think that google would have wanted/forced Motorola to be much better in the support area for software/updates, especially when Motorola have said that they wanted to keep the software as close to stock as possible due to faster updates etc. Either way there is still no reason that they couldn't have got the update out a lot sooner regardless of google's involvement (especially since the RAZR HD, MAXX and M got the update about a month ago in USA IIRC), if Samsung can get JB on a couple of devices like 2-3 months ago and HTC can get JB on several devices in the last few months then Motorola could have got it done a lot sooner due to the reasons in my previous post.

Google X phones "replacing" the nexus range?

I thought the X phone etc. were just going to be made by Motorola this time with googles involvement. I would be very surprised if google drop the nexus range/brand as it means that they will no longer be able to give other companies a go at competing for the nexus device (they said that they would like to give every company a chance of having a nexus device) and it would be stupid of them to drop it too.

I think the "googlerola" X phones will just be a phone(s) made by Motorola but google will have a lot of say into the design/hardware specs and that Motorola will still have control of software modifications and control the updates (going by the article that said they will add features and improve upon their current software on the rAZR phones) and google will still have their nexus range for showing of the latest android version and allowing other manufacturers to make nexus phones.

EDIT:

TBH, Motorola are doing a damn good job of their recent phones in terms of the software and hardware, imo probably the best you can get, it is just their awful support for anywhere outside of the USA and delayed releases. Still no word as to when the RAZR MAXX and HD will be available here if at all? And by the time they do come out here, you will have the next gen phones out i.e. M7, xperia Z and ZL, GS 4 announcement etc.

OMG, yes, it's not like they have to bespoke build and optimise software for a totally different Intel chipset that no one else uses...

Oh, wait :p

I had this pegged down for a late Q1 release - good on Motorola for being fairly quick with this, tbh!!

Have a read through this, not specifically about the version of the chipset used in the Razr i but I imagine that it wouldn't be hugely different.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2622...android_41_to_smartphones_with_its_chips.html

- they aren't providing support for any other phones apart from 4 phones thus have more time and money to put into those phones for the support
- more or less stock android software thus no having to fine tune to the levels of what would be needed for touchwiz and sense, HTC and Samsung have to work with completely different chipsets, Samsung have to work with the code/drivers etc. for the exynos and snapdragon S4 chipset and HTC have to work with tegra 3 (which is supposedly terrible to work with) and snapdragon S4 chipset too and then it isn't just about the chipset but screen res as well.

And the last network branded one X, GS 3 etc. devices got the 4.1 update a good month or 2 ago and they take forever to roll the updates out! IIRC it is only unbranded RAZR i devices that will be getting the update now so branded phones will/could be waiting another 1-3 months!

Therefore my point still stands :p

Saying that, every single company sucks when it comes to providing updates within a timely manner :( Like a 5-6 month gap till we get the next android update and the funny thing is 4.2 wasn't a big update at all, basic new features that can be found via an app from the market yet it will still take forever for it to come to other android phones :o :( Nexus 4 is extremely tempting!

Nexus 4 is extremely tempting!

Muhahaha join us in pure land. :p

But really, actual specs are the least important feature to me nowadays. Android is my mobile OS and I always want to be on the latest version. Therefore Nexus phones are literally my only option.

Unless manufacturers start making a much more concentrated effort on getting the latest versions of Android on their devices within weeks, rather then months I don't foresee my choices expanding anytime soon. :)

The only things which has really stopped me from pulling trigger is:

- screen, I don't know if I could adjust to LCD, the blacks and saturated/vivid colours are just too important, every time I look at new phones, I just find myself drooling over SAMOLED screens :p :o and finding LCD screens a bit "meh", the screens are great but I just prefer SAMOLED :)
- camera, my second or third most used feature on a phone and whilst the nexus 4 is pretty good, it doesn't look as good on the whole compared to the other flagship devices :( Also I have fallen in love with the sense camera for slow motion recording :p Unfortunately I can't see any good alternative on the market

Everything else about it is perfectly good though.

I couldn't care less about CPU/GPU raw performance anymore (S4 and exynos quad etc. is more than good enough and with JB it will be fast and smooth) and 1GB RAM is enough let alone 2GB RAM!

On the screen, after rooting there are numerous apps you can use to oversaturate the screen to some extent. Not to SAMOLED levels though that's for sure! (My SII was seriously way too over saturated anyway!)

True that. I would also severely miss the true blacks as my homescreens are sometimes just black :p :o

Indeed, the GS 2 is way too saturated!

Hopefully there will still be stock for the next week or 2 in case I do decide to get one......

Well Nexus, JB is on the way with a trickle of releases for the Razr i. Don't think there has been anything released for UK firmware Razr i. Mototrola reportedly have said they are soak testing and will be anything from 4 days to 2 weeks. Bit of the same old tale with Motorola in that they get their own US market Razr's up to the latest OS and the rest of the world we'll get round to sometime. That said they said Q1 2003 so I thought end of March

My Razr i is still ticking along nicely :D No sign of Razr HD Maxx being released in the UK. I fear there is no retailer support now. Not that bothered now and more interest in the discussion here of the new Moto X phone so that's where my potential next phone interest may lie :D

Well that depends on what your reference of DOA is, technologically its absolutely not, it has decent current gen high end specs, now that is obviously about to be changed with the move to 1080p etc but something with comparable specs to a GS3 for example isn't technologically DOA.

The fact it was a phone that practically nobody wanted to pay actual money to own however probably made it DOA in this country before they'd even produced it.

Razr HD is coming, Razr HD Maxx isn't, don't expect to ever see that here :(

If the Razr HD last as long as a Razr i does then unless you are away from power for extended periods, there'd be little point getting the HD Maxx. I rarely use half the battery in a day starting at before 6am and ending around 11pm. Occasionally forget to plug it in to charge over night and it still gets through the following day  Usage varies but average of an hour or so of calls, email, a few txts and maybe somewhere either side of 2 hours screen on a day, maybe little more. Not heavy usage granted.

Do you not have to pay for any phone one way or another?

The RAZR I battery life is fantastic, not quite as good as the razr hd iirc. The i battery life is even better than a stock gs 3 and stock one S!

looks epic - 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, and an 8-megapixel shooter, onboard storage to 32GB.

So no different from any number of other mobiles then?

Can people with the RAZR i please report back on Jelly Bean performance?

The launcher on my RHD was horrible after the update, but now installed Nova and it runs like a dream!

Also the HD is available for pre-order on some sites now :)

Any idea when they will actually be in stock?

Stupid move motorola :( Going to have to be going for a pretty cheap price i.e. less than £350 to do well since all the next gen phones will be coming out soon.
