Mattress advice

Hello all,

So I was hoping that someone could give me some advice on what mattress to get. I just had a look around the John Lewis at home store and must admit I liked the tempur sensation mattress however it was 1,500! I can pay that much if its worth it but it seems to be a bit over the top.

Would be nice to have some other suggestions / comparisons

Any advice greatly appreciated :)
 
John Lewis is a brilliant place to start, and the staff there will be very knowledgeable on their products - ask them and get their input!

That said, memory foam mattresses, such as Tempur, are quite simply brilliant. Just be aware that not everyone gets on with them! If you do like it, certainly worth the money.
 
2000 pocket sprung with a latex top layer, should only be around £500.

I have been sleeping on one for the past 3 years, and it is by far the best nights sleep I have ever had.
 
Factory Beds Direct. Was recommended to me from here and we bought two. Cannot pass on the recommendation enough. Amazing mattresses for less than half the price for the equivalent at John Lewis or similar.

We bought the Origins Comfort 1000 for the spare room and Origins Pocket 1500. The quality of the latter is SO much better than the £700 ones we were originally looking at in JL.

Memory foam is not the same as Tempur.
 
It really does depend on how much you want to spend. I don't think you need to spend a fortune to find a good quality mattress. For me, I cannot recommend a memory foam mattress as I find them too hot - great in the colder months, but very uncomfortable during the late spring/summer.

I would recommend a 1000 pocket sprung mattress as a nice balance between cost and comfort.

Thanks for the advice all! So far the girlfriend seems to be over ruling the guidance given and has decided that if it costs less than a grand then it's not worth it....... Women!


On a serious note, is there a downside to springs? My girlfriend seems to associate some kind of stigma :(
 
Spending a £1000+ on a mattress is a gamble really, should you not like it, there's little demand for a used mattress. Stories of people buying expensive memory foam mattresses and finding they are too warm etc.

You really have to be sure, hence test thoroughly in the shop, but even then that's never going to replicate a full nights sleep.
 
I spent just under 2k on a tempur mattress post hip surgery and after initially thinking it was excellent, with hindsight I wouldn't have got it. In the summer it makes me sweat like a pig and I find I wake up with various "dead" limbs where i've not changed position for too long, each to their own though.
 
We hated our memory foam one, cost a fortune but didn't get on with it, hated it infact. Ended up giving it to the parents for their spare room and we bought a non mem foam 2k sprung that is great. Best mattress we've ever had was a grass filled futon though.
 
I must say, I've recently had to buy a bed and we tried the memory foam mattresses and it just felt really odd. I don't think I could ever get used to it, so just went for the pocket sprung type. It was a little firmer than we thought when we sat on it in the shop, so we bought a mattress topper and protecter and now it feels purrrrfect.
