Hey all, basically I work 2 jobs. I work for Wetherspoons on weekends, earning no more than £50 a week. I also work for cumbria county council, apprenticeship earnings, £400 a month plus £60 expenses. I was being taxed @ 20% on Wetherspoons originally, before I started working for the council, which obviously I shouldnt have been. contacted tax office, got my rebate. cool. started working for the council as well in december 12, i was taxed on this too. 20%. I shouldnt be. contacted tax office again, in late january, my total combined income is around 7k per year, and the "helpful" guy at the tax office worked out that I shouldnt be paying tax at all. He changed my tax codes so that effectively I wasnt paying tax. received letter notifications of my new codes.
Well now, I have just received 2 letters, one saying my tax code from the tax year to 2013 is BR, (which is No swearing even disguised or lock stock style wrong, I DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES) and the other telling me that my code is changing from 944l to BR.

Why would the tax office sort my bloody problem out then do the exact same thing they did before? I earn much less than the threshold, live with parents, had it sorted, and theyve Fully star it out it up again. help. please.

Just ring the tax office, tell them you have 2 jobs and you want to split your tax code between then.

Give them the paye reference number for each employer and I would say use 300 on wetherspoons and the rest, 644, on the council

Edit : well those numbers will be from April, you currently have 810 to split

Don't worry about it. Anything paid will be sorted out at the end of the year. You will either receive a rebate, or a demand notice.

You 'free' tax amount only usually applies to the first job, but if you have overpaid on the second, you will get any overpayment back after the tax year.

you dont get it, ive been taxed on both jobs spoons was affordable. I could get by on the 20% tax on spoons, but on my apprenticeship, they were taking like £100 a month off! I cant afford to just wait for a rebate.
They told me, that my combined earnings were much less than the tax threshold, I had around £1500 per year to play with. the guy there said that I wont pay anything over both jobs.

Sorry for swearing, but this boils my pee, I thought I had it sorted and theyve just royally stuffed up my weekend. I cant ring them at work as I work 9-5 monday to friday!

thanks, i didnt know they were open till late monday to friday - ill ring them monday.
still, why would they sort my problem then reverse it?

A similar thing happened to me back in the mid 90s and it was the fault of their computer system not being updated.
Even back then there were only 3 'tax men' in our local offices and all the letters were computerised.

The original error was that they were taxing your pay incorrectly, but the current change in tax code is correct since the BR tax code is for those who have two jobs so you now have to pay 20% tax on your pay regardless of earnings (from my experience) and I don't think there's nothing you can do to have it changed back since their records will show that your working two jobs and not one.

They mucked up my tax code once before, but that was because their records were incorrect and needed correcting.

Handy hint, new tax year soon to start (April), these things happen a lot.

Another handy hint, never assume your tax code is correct each April, always check it as that will be the month where it changes, mistakes often happen and best to keep an eye on it.

I've overpaid by £8750 this year lets see if I get it back as quickly as they seem to want it.

If I'm late 3%interest
If they're late 0.5%

That's an impressive amount of overpayment! :D

They generally are pretty quick at refunding in my experience.

Self employed. Been too busy to get my books in ran out of time before July deadline for payment on account so just paid what they were after. (Well after being charged 3% interest for being late) Turns out I only owed them £2k but paid nearly £11k

Note for next year get my books in earlier.
