Hi all

Here's my plan, I can't afford a good spec PC so figured if I build one, I can buy bits one by one and it will help me learn the insides of a PC

Now I am looking for something fairly decent for what I need, I use expensive software, watch films and live sport. That's about it really!

So I was going to look to build a PC with 8GB ram, a decent processor etc etc

My first question is what case, I read a few guides but obviously I'm guessing a lot of the info on there is based on higher spec PC's. I am on a right budget but don't want a crap case that's going to cause overheating. I was looking at the zalman z9 plus, but noticed its Midi and would cost about £45. Are there any cheaper ones out there that would be sufficient for me without being rubbish or is this a good choice?

Also I would like an HDMI output for putting sport on my TV

Cheers :)

SO that case is decent?

Also, I noticed on eBay some power supplies of a fairly decent price, I read not to just look out for the total wattage, but to check for the Ampage on the 12v rail. Are these (Im guessing chinese) units any good as theyre Sub £20

Cheers :)

They will be cheap and nasty generic rubbish. As a rough guide you should be paying around £10 per 100 watts for a decent psu. There are a couple of exceptions to that rule such as the XFX in the build above, but stick to good brand names.

The psu is the single most important component in a pc and is not a place to save money.

+1, avoid cheap PSU's unless you would like to watch your build burn

Stick to brands such as;
XFX
Antec
Seasonic
Silverstone
Corsair

The Zalman Z9 is great for price, multiple stock fans and space for more.
Tool less HDD fitting.
Cable management.

Would have for you to loose all your components because of a bad PSU!!

Great advice, definietley noted

See there are PC's on eBay, 8gb, 3+ GHZ, 1TB etc for about £270

I wanted to try and build something near this budget, but obviously doing it myself I can learn more about the workings of the PC

You'd need to get all the details to make an informed decision.

Make & Model for:
Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Graphics & PSU.

Personally, I'd not touch them with a barge pole. Get it from here, you know exactly what you are getting that way.

You will find that these pre-builds utilise low quality parts such as;
PSU (will be basic PSU, unbranded)
Motherboard (low chipset)
RAM (1333mhz / slow)

If you build it yourself, you know exactly whats going into your pc, and that its reliable with a good warranty from OCuk.

+1 to Snips

We could spec you a PC for that kind of price, but you'd be looking at really cheap if not Grade B parts, Grade B is fine, but each person will have their preference:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A8-5500 3.20GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD5500OKHJBOX) £77.99
1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
1 x GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1866C10DC) £39.95
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020046-UK) £34.98
1 x **B Grade** Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM £30
1 x Zalman T1 Mini Tower Case - Black £19.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £273.49 (includes shipping : £10.50).

Thanks for all the help guys, can someoby tell me the difference between

AMD BULLDOZER FX-4170 4.2GHZ QUAD CORE PROCESSOR

and

AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor

Both a similar price, bearng in mind my main uses will be viewing sport (HD if poss) and using design and other powerful software

thanks :)

So you quote the link. :D:p:D

lol

The A10 has integrated graphics which would be a great budget solution for playing games. You can run the likes of Crysis, BF3, FarCry etc.... However, you need fast RAM (1866, 2133, 2400) for the graphics to be any good in gaming.

The 4170 does not and if you are going to invest in an AMD chip, the 6300 would be the only decent one to look at.

eBay tends to have "gaming PCs" with lowend graphics cards as well such as Radeon 6450 which isn't more capable than onboard graphics
