Hi all....

After a bit of advice on which graphics card to get to go in my sons PC..

For years now my son has been an avid Xbox 360 guy. I built him a cheap n chearfull LGA 775 machine and it did what an older machine would do but was no good for gaming.
Last November he asked for a better PC for his birthday.

I kitted him out with :-
Asus P8Z77-V LX
i3 2120 3.3 Sandybridge CPU
8 GB 1600 RAM
Billy No Make 550W PSU - Does have one GPU Socket ( or what ever its name is)

NO GRAPHICS CARD - Just using on board......

Just the other day he told me he wanted to sell his newish 360 Elite and all his Xbos stuff and buy a better graphics card....

He is after getting a Corsair Vengeance C70 in green first. His really old outdated case is just not fit for owt good really.

He understands that it is not ONE thing whaich makes your PC a good one but ALL the bits combined.
I think the board is a good foundation to build on as it would take an i7 3770k.

I am not sure what sort of PC games he intends to play on the PC but I know he did paly all those COD,Gears Of War type games on the Xbox so I suppose he will want to play the same type on his PC.

Can you tell me is an i3 upto that job and what graphics card would suit such a machine.

The budget will not be sky high, I was looking at..

This and the C70 case falls within his budget. I was wondering if this would do the job of playing high end games ?
Or would it be better to sink the money into an i5 or i7 CPU to start with then save for a better graphics card, maybe one costing twice as much,£200..

To be honest I have no idea about graphics cards and what makes a good one or a bad one...

Tips please...

Tbh that is a lot to spend on a case when normally that is more of a luxury item are you have the core components.

I would personally go with a 2gb AMD 7850. AMD really come into there own in the lower price ranges.

What resolution does he play at? This had a big impact on what card to get

The case will do nothing for the PC so I'd be inclined to spend a bit less on that, and get some green paint if necessary. As for the graphics card, the price tends to indicate the cards performance but there are budget versions of most cards around. If the budget is £200, I'd go for a £50 case such as an Antec 300 and go up a step on the graphics card to a GTX660.

If you prefer an AMD graphics card I'm sure someone will be along shortly to recommend an equivalent.

Andi.

Some great tips there..Cheers guys.

Funny talking about the price of the case. I was just showing my son this thread I have made to help us along and he said he was thinking about the C70 and came up with the plan to buy a lot cheaper case and a better card.

He was looking while at college and saw this case

Quite a price difference and it dont read too bad either.
I said that sounds like a good idea,I will show him the cards sugested and let him have a read up on them.

Cheers guys...Keep the tips coming..

budget amigo?

Budget will be around £200....Plus a little bit from me if needed....

I sugested to him to go with the cheap case
This card

a 7850 as somebody sugested.
His 18th comes up in November of this year so I am sure he'll have enough to buy an i7 3770K....

Not too worried about the PSU. It has connestions for a GPU,it was cheap and when it goes I would help him out with a nice Corsair one. I have a TX 850 in my machine and it is pretty good..

I'd spend the extra and get a 2GB 7850, 1GB is too low to sink that kind of money in to, otherwise better to get a second hand card.

Also I'd look at a PSU as you don't want that bad boy taking out the whole of his new PC, never skimp on a PSU, Rule No.1 with PCs :)

i5 will play games just as well as the i7, getting the i7 is a pointless overspend.

As for the GPU, yes i agree with the 7850, its the best GPU for the money right now, it will play anything at high or maxed Graphics settings.

But i would suggest going for the 2GB version, the 7850 is capable of pushing higher Graphics settings than 1GB can deal with.

The one OptimaLnrg linked is a steal at £150.

Some more great points there. Thanks to everybody !!!

Regarding a cheap PSU going bang and taking other stuff out with it, WOW never thought about that. Wont take that risk and I will help him out there.

I will show him these replies and look at a 2gig card.

So an i5 would do. I have an i5 3570k and like it, got it for a good price off OCUK so will think about that later on in the year.

His current chip is only an i3.....

Once again thanks for these tips...

I've just got a bitfenix case was about £50 nice and cool for me. But then there's fans etc to buy.
I'd look at selling what you currently have and looking to the forums for maybe some good second hand gear. An i5 would be great I'd go with a 7950 graphics card you could get an 7870 for a good price too. A new CPU about 750w would be good too. No need for a 1200 they are over kill
