French driver trapped for an hour in speeding 125mph car with no brakes

Couldn't they have just put a car infront of it, something big like a SUV, and have that brake gradually?

Just escorting it till it ran out of fuel seems retarded.

He was unhurt but suffered two epileptic seizures.

What... at 125mph?!

Even if the car was adapted for a disabled driver surely there were some other options? Knock it into neutral or wait for a straight section of road and kill the power for starters.

The story has a whiff of BS about it TBH.

And to wait for it to run out of petrol... and then crash it in to a ditch, well played  sounds like the actions of someone I know who "... pulled into a space and then the car got stuck so I had to hit the wall to get out." Ummm... no you didn't!

I think he just fancied a crazy drive at top speed since the Renault techs can't find anything wrong :p but then, they're Renault techs...

True, how about PAS and brakes?

Wouldn't it be better to whack it in neutral as quick as possible and let it bounce on the rev limiter until you've rolled to a stop, then kill the ignition?

PAS wouldn't work but that's only a problem sub 10mph, brakes again will be ok since you have vacuum in the reservoir, which should do a few presses, however i'd assume the brakes are already hosed.

You could wack it into netural, and that's what i'd do in a manual car.

I can understand how the throttle might jam open, but how would he be stuck in a position where he couldn't put it in neutral?

Jammed, failed or broken gear linkage, problem with any of the gearbox selector components, cars can get stuck in gear due to clutch problems especially when you have load on the engine.

sounds so stupid

like has been said, turn off the ignition or take it out of gear if you REALLY care about pas and brake servo

Surely he must have been incredibly lucky that people moved out the way before the police came to escort him!

Imagine a car coming up at 125mph behind you, I'd just think 'you'll have to slow down sunshine' and end up ploughing into me.

Such a bizarre story.

A car adapted for disabled use, presumably automatic. They tend to have buttons and things instead of pedals so perhaps the control system was to blame. Can you put an auto into neutral when its moving? I've never tried.

Newer renaults tend to have button starts so maybe it doesn't let you turn it off if you're driving or something.
