New F35 exceeds specs by reducing them and we want to dump our Eurofighters for it!

This is the plane which will replace the Tornado and the Harriers which made up the majority of our strike force. The F35 is essentially a stealth strike fighter.

We have about 120 Tornadoes in service and it was intended that 128 F35 fighters would replace them and the bunch of Harriers we withdrew, with a total reduction in airframes.

The F35 programme has become so delayed and hit so many issues, that the cost per aircraft has skyrocketed and countries like Canada are considering cancellling their order. Even our F35 buy has been reduced due to the increasing cost down to 48 fighters initially:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/07/us-lockheed-britain-f-idUSTRE8160ZB20120207

Even that number is for our carriers, and probably it will mean only one of our two carriers will have a full air wing.

However,I did not know that supposedly, the MoD said it is going to replace the Eurofighter fighters(which are more optimised for air superiority) with the F35 in the near future:

http://www.janes.com/products/janes...065969970&channel=defence&subChannel=business

LOLWTF??

To put in context this how many Eurofighters we will get:
1.)Tranche One - 55
2.)Tranche Two - 89
3.)Tranche Three - 40

That is a total of 184 aircraft bought.

Now the first Tranche was deliver starting 2007:

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...first-multi-role-eurofighter-typhoons-215964/

However, these will be withdrawn between 2015 to 2018 as upgrading them will be too expensive(after only 8 years for the oldest),and Saudi Arabia bought the 24 of the Tranche two aircraft. So that will leave us with around 105 aircraft.

The thing is not all the tranch two and tranch three aircraft have not been delivered yet,so it shows how young most of the aircraft will be.

Yet now the MoD is wanting to replace the Eurofighter so soon. The timeframe is supposedly between 2015 to 2030 IIRC.

That means the Eurofighter will have a very short lifespan as frontline RAF aircraft. Considering how much we contributed to the development, and the cost of each aircraft,so how can 10 to 20 years be an acceptable lifespan?? Moreover, the Eurofighter for non-strike duties is meant to be better suited than the F35. For instance it won't replace the F15 in USAF,and plenty of them are over 20 years old. Even the USAF F22s were delivered between 2003 and 2012,and I doubt they will be withdrawn very soon either.

So we will spend billions on new fighters to replace old fighters we just spend billions of quid on. On top of that we are upgrading the T2 and T3 aircraft for better ground attack ability, the reason we are ditching the T1 aircraft is because they are more suited for interception duties! So what is the point of upgrading them, then if it is a stop gap??

The worst thing is we gave up a lot of manufacturing share on the F35, to get more control over the software and Italy gets more financial benefit from the programme than us!

Why don't we just keep a certain number of F35 for our carriers, keep our 105 already paid for Typhoons, and use UCAVs for the rest?? I can just see what will happen. We lose a lot of money ditching the Typhoons, buy more F35s which are not cheap either, and then find cheaper UCAVs can do the job of a lot of them,5 years later, and we end up wasting even more money since we will mothball a decent number of the F35s.

It'll all change and we'll waste a shed load of money again, for example look at;

TSR 2
Nimrod MR4A
Sentinel
Harriers
Maybe even the Apaches!

I can't see us getting rid of Typhoons for a while yet, we've got far too much invested in it. I think we should put the pitchforks down until we have a proper announcement.

Then they sting all us numpties with the bill!!

I certainly hope not!! With the development cost amortised over less airframes, they are not cheap!!

Look at the Sentinel though?? The government and MoD just cannot make up their mind on what they are doing, and then wasted £100 million IIRC on the F35 variant change study too.

The MOD's procurement is a complete and utter joke!

We aren't the power we used to be, nor can we be when we get the so many things wrong and have a military that have a black hole as big as their anual budget.

RE Typhoon - would it not be better and much cheaper to buy the Rafael or one of the American counterparts?

No, not really. Our armed forces are about power projection and that directly influences our influence in world (including economic) policy.

Well I know how it works, boot on the neck of the sand people to keep the oil prices low and all.

Just seems like a pessimistic survival strategy.

I dont see the Typhoon going anywhere, fewer number very possible but we wont drop the asset altogether besides the F35 is a different role to the typhoon.
, same goes for Apache, far too much of an asset just to drop.

Does anyone not think we spend a bit too much on the armed forces anyway?
Nah, not enough, however we spend FAR too much on the benefit system, but thats another topic entirely, lets not stray from the intended subject.

We already have paid for the aircraft. We wanted 232,got 184,and now will have 105 in service.

At this rate I suspect the UAE will have more fighters!! :p

How low will it drop though?? 105 aircraft is not many for a nation of nearly 70 million people?

Or are they going to keep lopping the numbers, until they rationalise spending billions more on additional F35 aircraft and withdrawing the Typhoon?? These might not even be better than the Typhoon in many metrics either. The F35 is overweight, under capacity, overtime and the price has shot up.

Most of its not even built here,so the UK workforce is not seeing much benefit - even the Italians get more jobs out of the programme!!

Many of the standoff functions the Typhoon can already do. We have long range missiles, and are developing UCAVs which are more cost effective. The F35 is only really better for penetrating highly defended airspace which has modern systems. Even, then we don't know if its export safe level of tech will be enough to justify its price tag!!

Even the US is not replacing the F15 and F22 with the F35.

Wasting billions of quid like this is pushing our country deeper into debt and is causing cuts from other parts of our military.

I'm all for getting value for money for the military assets we buy (thread)

But 'not enough'? Where the hell is the science + renewable energy budget we need in this damn country?

Agree on the benefits though. Pop a sprog and get your rent paid, what a crock of ****.

anyways, enough of my offtopic ramblings

:mad::mad::mad:

American planes, I can deal with, but not French ones :p:D

If this is true, the RAF will waste a huge amount of taxpayer's money, shortly after wasting plenty on the voyager aircraft.

part of the problem i think with the eurofighter is we dont have a use for air superiority. Or rather all you need is a hot air balloon and you've gained air surperiority now days.

That and they dont run of carriers. Air power of the future is going to be predominantly carrier based. Its more effective and versatile. Land bases will become predominantly for rotary aircraft and logistics C130/C17 etc with the brunt of the air support for ground troops being delivered by apaches (they're extremely effective at it!)

The RAF is becoming more and more a logistics branch and the navy is picking up the air power.

I don't think we spend too much on our armed forces, but there is no doubt that there is serious wastage and poor levels of foresight.

Some of the allocations for the RAF in T2 were used to supply the Saudi order. The F35 had big delays, one was apparently due to the fact that the thruster for the VTOL wasnt powerful enough to lift the aircraft weight and perform a vertical take off. There are still plenty of aircraft to be delivered to the various customers. The aircraft isnt going anywhere soon, the F35 is an additional aircraft for the RAF not a replacement

But the link says they're going for extra F35A which will always be land based.

Couldn't they have decided they didn't need them before the gajillion pounds was pumped into the project.

Oh and what military project doesn't run into unexpected costs these days. It seems to be a recurring problem. Lowest bidder wins, realised they've set an unrealistic budget, then goes to the government cap in hand, who cough up every time.

The RAF is a joke, a complete money pit. I worked on RAF aircraft for almost 17 years on and off and they are a complete aged joke. Not that the company I worked for cared, it printed it's own money from RAF contracts.

50 year old aircraft, one aircraft gets hit with small arms fire. Best spend millions fitting foams to fuel tanks of said 50 year old aircraft. Tristar aircraft that should be sold to gypsies for scrap. Lets spend millions each year maintaining them and despite only having a few years life left lets do a glass cockpit upgrade.

Some palms get greased from RAF contracts that's for sure.

People are quick to point the finger at government workers for pensions and salaries yet the number of RAF aircraft techs I know that didn't do 22 but where paid 6 figures to take redundancy and full pension is frankly ****ing laughable.

I was at Lyneham in the early 00's and they had all the hangar door open and the heating full blast to make sure they used up the budget. I wasn't allowed to work in the Hanger on a friday because they didn't want a mess. People go on about NHS waste but it's literally miniscule compared to the complete joke the RAF is and military contracts.
