Right folks i'm after a tablet... Been wanting to get one for a while.

Don't really wanna spend over £250.. So whats out there for that price?

It'll be mainly used for web browsing and youtube. My 5 year old will be using it most of the time, I'll only be using it for Skygo/iplayer etc...

You have 2 choices within that budget really.

You like Android:
Get the Nexus7, nothing much is better for your budget.

You like iOS
Get an iPad mini

Both are great devices.
 
Firstly... Factor in the price of a case! I'd recommend one that allows you to stand the tablet up (so kid won't be holding it all the time), and still will protect it in a minor drop/knock. Think leather.

For the tablet itself:

10.1"
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Around £250.
Asus Transformer TF300 (or maybe lucky and find a higher model).

7"
Nexus 7 - Best value in it's range and good spec - get the "poetic" case for it.
Blackberry Playbook is cheaper, but good quality. (Not sure if it supports skygo though!)

Yea i was looking at the iPad mini, but no Retina Display.

Nexus 7 is another choice. Can pick up the 32gb version for £169 after discount

And whats the tab 2 10.1 like? Any good?
 
The lack of retina display doesn't really matter too much in the case of the iPad mini. It looks quite fine. Have you actually seen one?

The main reason I'd lean towards the mini is the app store; I'm pretty sure (I haven't verified it though) that the iOS app store is going to have a somewhat huge lead over the Android one when it comes to children's tablet apps/games/etc.
 
Nexus 7, my 4 year old boy loves it and it's the right size for his hands.

I think a 10 inch would be to big for a kid

I'll be doing a job in Shaw tomorrow if you want to test it :-)

If you want Sky Go, I'm pretty certain that the chances of it working on an iOS device is much higher than that of say a Nexus 7 or any Android device.
 
Looks like it's between nexus 7 and iPad mini.

I've looked up on both. Both are great. As for apps i'm not that too bothered tbh. As i said i'll be only using it for Sky Go, Iplayer etc.

Mainly my son will be using it. But with me owning an iPhone 5 the iPad mini is looking a better choice in terms of apps, syncing etc...

Sadly, this is true.

Sky Go use to work on the Nexus 7 but the recent update to 4.2.2 (which I got yesterday) has broken Sky Go so I'm now waiting on Sky to update the android app, and if I was to guess how long that will take, let's just say I won't be holding my breath..
 
Just been looking up between the two. The nexus 7 wins hands down. £100 cheaper.

I'm better off getting a nexus 7 32gb for £169 then paying £269 for a iPad mini. Yes in terms of apps ios is superior. But not fussed. Only need a handful of apps. Andriod should have them all.

Gonna go to Currys/PC World tomorrow and play with one.

Sky hate android kit, they're getting too much of a kickback from apple to do any serious work on it.
 
For watching TV and stuff I'd take a 16:10 (Nexus 7) screen over a 4:3 screen everytime (assuming they're otherwise of comparable quality).

I have no idea about SkyGo etc working on Android though, as I download all my TV and only stream SC2 tournaments (via flash in browser ;)).

TwitchTV app works better for streams ;).

But yes, that is a good point, the 16:10 is much nicer to watch on compared to the 4:3, black bars are annoying :(.

GOM get more monies when you sub to GSL on their site than subbing via Twitch.

The only time I really watch stuff (on my phone) is at work, so the only tournaments on then are GSL and Proleague, both of which require subs to watch in anything better than 360p, which means you cant use the Twitch Android app :(.

I do use it occasionally instead of the browser though, used 2.1GB on the TwitchTV app since the 9th of this month, obviously I forgot about it in my original post :p.

As for the 16:10/4:3 thing, a 7" 16:10 (Nexus 7) device has an area 90% of a 7.85" 4:3 (iPad mini) device when viewing 1.78 (16:9, TV/straight to DVD movies) or 2.35 (proper films), a 7" 16:9 device would have only 4% (I was remembering the wrong thing originally :/) less area than the iPad mini :).

I'd still take the 10% size hit for less black bars though :p.

Edit: My memory sucks, it's 11% smaller for the Nexus 7, and 6% smaller for a 7" 16:9 tablet :o.
