Hello!

I'm looking to buy a pen as a gift for my wife, who is an avid writer.... So, collective wisdom of OCUK, I am just wondering if someone can suggest something? Hoping to spend in the region of £50, and would welcome recommendations...

Thanks!

I know quite a lot about pens.

They generally have ink in them.
There are many different colours of ink available.
One end is used to write things.
Some have caps.
Some have click tops.

See, knowledge.

If it's any help I've had plenty of pen gifts in the past and never used one of them as none of them feel right in my hand. They're nothing amazingly expensive but still of a decent quality compared to your average bic.

It's a fairly personal thing really but if it was me I would be very happy with some of these:

Lamy are fairly well known and good pens. Least with a fountain you are getting something nice. Ball pens mostly must have the same basic refills so you just pay for name.
I love my fountain pen - it's a Waterman but they seem a bit more than your budget now.
It's a lot smoother than most ball pens and also doesn't go missing at work as no one else will use it :)
maybe also a classic Parker 51 but you would need to be careful of where you get it and condition etc.

If you want to get something different or fun check out this eBay seller:

I have used him several times. Delivery is a bit slow but pens are fine for the money. Just don't expect the greatest quality from them! They all worked though.
