Chromebook Pixel announced

I wish I could believe that, if MS brought something like this out their would now be articles on the usual blogs asking all kinds of questions about MS's demise, how badly their thinking must be, questioning all the design team and in the end blaming it on Baller with some half hint that they need to get rid of him.

The key difference is this isn't a hyped product at all, it most probably isn't in very large scale production and they probably aren't expecting anything. That is a stark contrast to surface or other products.

Google knew they weren't making a desirable device because of the OS constraints, but they wanted to make an extreme premium product anyway. In terms of quality and specs this is at macbook pro level, but thinner and cheaper.

On paper it's a good device let down by the under developed OS. If a company like Microsoft had announced this exact laptop with the same styling and specs running Windows 8 there would be more excitement then anyone has seen for a long time for a non Apple product.

The hardware is really good, it's just not purchasable. It serves as a good base for products going forward as Google evolve the OS.

Then its looks even worse, as Google have not only now feed the perceived image of not usable as a stand alone OS on a device, but has now just priced their devices out of the market, its a ridiculous move, on hardware that no one is interested in because of that.
What changes in a year from now for them?..they bring out a just as expensive lappy with an OS that is more or less useless to anyone that would consider spending that much, and not go opt for OSx or Win8.

I don't see what the problem is, apart from the HDD space this is as good if not better then any ultrabook at the price. I understand chrome OS isn't very useful but you can stick Linux on it and you have one really nice ultrabook. Personally the way I see it, this it the only machine on the market bar apples that shows really thought and attention, design looks very nice and build should be amazing. The price is a huge turn off but I think its a great device.

How many are happy that after a few years they get landed with having to pay a monthly price for that "storage".

Whole thing seems ludicrous, if ANY other company released this their would be a scat storm all over the place.

Firstly, after three years you don't just lose your 1TB of storage. It simply turns to "read only".

Secondly, plenty of people have speculated why Google may have made this move. Are you going to accept anyone else's judgement or just keep saying the same thing?

Sorry yes, I forgot about the "red only thing", but isn't that a half ransom?...your kinda locked into it, would you really want 1tb ( if you get to use all of that) of info that you could only read, and not be able to upload or download from?, I assume this is what Google is kind of betting that you would give in and pay the monthly price.

Im not really seeing a widespread judgement, I mean look at it this way, all the time that the Chrome OS has been out, its been really advertised and accepted as the alternative web browser to all of Googles services at a very cheap price, what is it now?

Really? Considering the price what is so exceptional about the hardware?

Very nice design, full aluminium body, highest PPI screen on the market, good CPU and Ram and Touchscreen.

I don't see why people are getting up in arms about it, it's a new brand Google can develop over the years.

They can either make Chrome OS much more functional, or combine Android into Chrome OS somehow and go from there.

Not for me it isn't. Isn't value for money.

I suspect if this was £800, the comments in this thread would be the same.

This is cheap for someone who wants cloud storage.

If you want cloud storage you'll go get cloud storage and not bother buying this overpriced laptop with a crippled OS. The price on cloud storage is a little arbitrary, if for example Microsoft were to say the Surface RT is actually dirt cheap because you get $1k worth of technical support no many would fall for it.

Even more surprising they actually have a profit margin on these laptops, it really does seem like the most wrongheaded decision they've made in a while.

That doesn't mean they're necessarily wrong though. ;)

Seriously though this thing has been panned everywhere I've looked so it's not like Google are getting a free pass here, the guy in the video above suggesting this is just what Google would like others to do is the most positive comment I've heard about it. Personally when/if this thing flops I see it sending the opposite message but I'm sure Google know best.

They've been selling Chromebooks as cheap lightweight devices which enable you to live on the cloud which goes counter to a very expensive laptop which will have around 5 hours of battery life and cost more than comparable devices which don't have such a crippled OS. You can't even pinch to zoom on it! :o

The irony is I'm pretty sure a lot of people would like to own one but the price makes it a no go for pretty much everyone until you can bung linux on it. Which again makes me wonder why Google is selling this thing for a profit, if they'd knocked the price down they wouldn't have seen this torrent of bad press.

I think its more of a "Look what we can do". I like it personally, it shows how Google has grown over the year interms of design and how they can compete if not beat the competition in this department, which lets face it was their weakest part for a long time. I do agree if it was cheaper I would personally be looking at it to put Linux on and take it around.

I dont get what your arguing... I've already said the OS makes it not purchasable. The thing is Google doesn't really care, it's not meant to sell many.

All I'm saying is that the hardware is very very nice, if it was a Windows 8 laptop for the same price it would be highly sought after.

They are just laying foundations for things to come, as they hopefully converge Android and Chrome OS or making Chrome much much better they have the Pixel brand as a premium Macbook competitor. They don't really care if it's not that successful now.

128GB SSD and the ability to play all media types and this would fly off the shelves.

No proper media support and poor internal storage= fail

I'm arguing it's a device which doesn't do anything well, a very good screen with no media support, a premium product (and the price to match) with tiny storage capacity, a powerful system which eats the battery quickly on a device meant to live in the cloud.

All I'm saying is that the hardware is very very nice, if it was a Windows 8 laptop for the same price it would be highly sought after.

Perhaps and while I certainly want to see more well made devices its unique selling point is the screen which Microsoft isn't really encouraging with Windows 8 (although I think the split screen stuff in Windows 8 is pretty weak and needs changing to be truly useful).

OK I can see that but no one is saying this is a bad bit of hardware, the complaint is the software on this hardware makes as much sense as a chocolate teapot. Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on improving that software so you can seriously consider whatever hardware it's available on?

More I look at it the by far biggest issue is the HDD space.

The cloud storage being temporary is naff

They talk about the online storage like it's something amazing.... worth $800 per year blah blah. But last time I checked I could buy a 3TB hard drive for a hundred quid and it would last for a much longer time, not to mention I would have all my data with me and not pay through the nose for internet to download it all again and again whenever I want to access it. I would also not be entrusting all my private data to google - something I would rather avoid.

Chromebook Pixel = only for the brainless.

Wow, have you actually just compared a 3TB hard drive to cloud storage? Brilliant.
