Few days ago I received my B grade Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 and had few problems with installing it (more info here) and yesterday I have noticed that it is crashing. At first I didn't know why my PC is crashing and I thought it is only in MW3 (more info here), since I havent tested that on anything else long enough. Solution offered in that thread helped (reducing the frequency by 50MHz in both core and mem). But today I have decided to reset it to default and play WoW - an hour later - crash. I was wondering why is that happening and if it is well known issue with this particular GPU (that's why there is 10+ B graded hd 7850s in stock atm)? I am well upset, since I just got it and I put a lot of thought into which GPU to get, but should I return it?

Anyone? Please?

By the way, how much of a performance decrease would it be if I will keep it 50Mhz below default?

And what to get instead for pretty much the same price? Or should I try the same model, but different one?

sorry to hear you are having problems again. i half expected you to come back ststing u were having probd with the gigabyte. and if i had seen ur recommendation post earlier id have advised you to not get it. ok well a few things first. install the latest cat 13.2beta. make sure ati ccc overdrive is disabled, download trixx. dont usr afterburner for now using gpuz monitor you max vcore the card is giving out and let us know what it is. also in trixx increase the power limit to 20%

The above in bold is all you need to read. Return it. Funny thing was not long after I sent mine back and bought a 560ti-448 the B Grade gigabytes 7850 disappeared from clearance. Looks like they are back!

You must have missed out on the delights of this thread from fellow sufferers.

If by vcore you meant VDDC (f*ck knows what that is, but it seems like voltage) than it is 1.138 V at 100% load.

Will increase power limit to 20% now in Trixx.

EDIT: I didn't actually have to do it in Trixx, could have done it in CCC. anyhow - done.

Yeah... Nice.. I was afraid of that.. The problem is - I have notice the amount of GPUs only after I ordered. Let's hope there is a known fix for that.

P.S. the thing is - apart from the fact that my GPU is rubish and crashing all the time - I loved it. It is very quiet and keeps cool all the time. Performance is what I needed (untill it crashes). So if there is an easy fix - like some software tweaks to do, then I will probably keep it. Otherwise if it is a lot of hastle to fix it - not worth it...

using trixx i'd increasee voltage to 1.18v and with 20% power limit check with gpuz that the vcore is increasing to 1.18v. if it is then try the stdandard clocks with the new voltage. if still not stable try increasing voltage in increments upto 1.20

How to stress test it, so that I would induce the crash faster? Don't really fancy playing something and expect it to crash any minute lol

I found somewhere that flashing BIOS would help using these, but if it is worth trying, then I don't know which one is for me f31 and f5_a. Untill today I didn't even know about vBIOS ...

does the voltage increase from using trixx. heaven is good for testing and any game that u had crashes b4 to keep it a fair test. i havent flashed these but did my 6950 as it has a dual bios,so safe to do so
. dont think ur card has dual bios so id be wary

you shouldn't have to mess with voltages at all unless overclocking past ccc overdrive limits

1.138v is that cards default voltage,it varies with each gpu,i have one 7850 that uses 1.138v also and I can clock to 1050mhz core/1375mhz memory without touching voltages or the power control slider

are you 100% sure its the gpu that's crashing or is it pc oc or memory related? when it crashes does the sound loop or buzz?

If you read through the thread link I posted you will find that was one of the things tried. Lots of things were tried, underclocking, increasing voltage, setting power to 20% etc etc etc.

In end few got frustrated and sent it back.
There is no magic software fix.
I wondered what the different bios were at the time. I found out eventually.

F5_A bios is latest one for GV-R785OC-2GD cards ignore the F31 one.

Dont get me wrong I was looking forward to another GTX 460 style excellent overclocking value for money card which the 7850 was known to be but the reality was way too much of a lottery in getting a bad card. It seems to happen too many times.

It is more of a buzz sound, yeah. I just assumed it is GPU. The same day I installed new GPU, I got 2 more RAM sticks as well...

I'm not sure I'd flash the bios if its not stable I'd be tempted to send it back.

Fair enough, will try to flash it and see.
