I've been scammed...

Why is that a problem? I sell a fair amount on there and I never ever ask them to come to my place. Always in public. Last thing I want is some psycho rocking up stealing all my stuff :P

When dealing with mobile phones I'd like to know the sellers address (and meet them there) for 1. security purposes 2. testing of the phone via wifi and whatnot 3. it shows more of the sellers trustworthiness if he invites me in to his home for a business transaction, i.e. he has nothing to hide and I can always go back there with a few hired bouncers if he sells a dodgy phone (not really :D). Psychos rocking up? Nah just make sure you have your boxing stance ready :p

Alas, I don't think I'll ever bother trying to buy a phone from gumtree again, far too risky even if it's cash on collection.

Very naive and trusting hope you learned something for £400. Hope you get the item though.

FAR FAR too RISKY buying any second hand phone on Gumtree and eBay.

For one these new iPhones and Samsung handsets more than likely are an contract upgrade. Its all well and good turning up and paying cash on delivery, what is usually the case a few months down the line the phone will get blocked due to it been reported lost/stolen, the guy who sold you the phone pockets your £400 and gets a shiny new phone.

Always make sure it is registered PAYG and not in any way a contract phone. See a receipt for proof of this. Always take the receipt with you, after all its now your and no good to the guy. If there is no receipt look on the phones box for the IMEI and the network its locked to. Ring the network up and ASK there are always more than willing to say yes its a contract phone, after all they don't want there phone been passed on. Because after all it is there's! The networks providers phone till the contract has been paid off, not for anybody else to sell one!!

hmmm cant believe you paid via BT to someone you didnt know and didnt see the item in person.

ya Ive posted a few items on GT but seems like people dont use it so much.

Wow, people actually pay that much money to random people on the internet? With no confirmation that the person is genuine or trustworthy?

People do use gumtree and it is in fact a very popular medium to sell items. But its intended to be cash on collection. People selling items intended for the buyer to collect, within the local area.

There are quite a lot of scams on gumtree, people advertising phones relativity cheap, what they do it list an email address only and hit you with spam on how to get the product that cheap, or advertising an item with PayPal only. This is a big no no as there is no Feedback system.

Rule of the thumb is never pay for an item you cannot physically touch, always collect the item. Use eBay for nationwide auctions.

Just keep it alive until Op updates, probably hoping this falls off page 1 so everyone forgets.

GD never forgets.

I sold something on gumtree once.

Guy put the cash into my account, and I sent the parcel recorded next day. I was only offering it up as cash on collection but the guy really wanted it. I did think it was quite trusting, but then again I'm not going to rip him off.
