Kat, H33t, Fenopy blocked in the UK

I just found out that the Opera Turbo feature bypasses all the blocks anyway! Not that I use any of those sites anyway..

I wonder how long it will take them to realise that blocking is a waste of time.

I'm pretty sure they already know that. The Pirate Bay usage apparently went up when they blocked it, the block did practically nothing and was free advertising for them.

I, for one, approve of this. No doubt this will end online piracy overnight! :D

At some point the morons need to realise that the business model of publishers is outdated and broken.

The annoying thing is the film & TV industry is just so so far behind music.

I used to Torrent music no end 5+ years ago. OiNK was the first casualty and was sorely missed. Now I pay for Spotify Premium and haven't looked back. I know some people don't like it but it suits my needs perfectly. I've never used iTunes but it's also a massive alternative to buying the physical product.

When it comes to films and TV there's no comparable option. I've trialled Netflix, LoveFilm, NowTV etc and they're all terrible. Poor choice, terrible quality, not great value etc.

I'm also not afraid to say that I still download films because I also buy them. I have the biggest DVD/Blu-ray collection of anyone I know and I buy films that I like after I've seen them. Much in the same way I'd return an item of clothing or furniture if I didn't like it, I watch films via download first and then buy them if I'm unsure if they're going to be good or not.

In the past I've also seen a film being shown on TV and downloaded it instead to watch because the quality will be better. I pay a TV license and I can't see any logical difference.

I could cope without it for most things, but TV is simply not an option. The TV industry is decades behind modern distribution technology.

Geoff Taylor, the British Phonographic Industry chief executive, welcomed the ruling. "Music fans shouldn't have to worry that sites distributing music online are illegal and unethical. Blocking illegal sites helps ensure that the legal digital market can grow and labels can continue to sign and develop new talent."

Good joke

You can't really moan when something that is ultimately used for dubious reasons is shut down.

I agree that the movie/music and TV industry is behind the times when it comes to how people want to consume media in the modern age but that doesn't give people the right to complain when dodgy sources for acquiring such are removed.

There are people with the strange notion that the internet is a tool that can be used for what ever purpose the like regardless.

I can't see how this would effect anything really. I'll admit, I use tpb for US TV Shows, although past few weeks I've been streaming it from another site, I also use it for game demos as a 'Demo' released by publishers does not reflect the final game. If I like it, I buy it ALWAYS. I've had plenty of games and saved many £100's in trailing them, play them for hour or 2, think it's good, buy it, if it's guff, delete and never relate to it again (Aliens Colonial Marines anyone?)

Like the guy a few posts above, I also do it with movies as it's hard to gauge if you will like it.

All-in-all Pirating will never die and it's also not as harmful as the media make it out to be.

Didn't use any of those anyway, most of my US shows are over IRC bots, can still access them fine on Be though.

I blame Peter Mandelson. Its his fault that censorship is seen as an acceptable way of dealing with what is, in reality, a very minor problem.

It's not the sites being shut down that bothers me. It is the total waste of time and resources that could be better spent elsewhere.

Shutting down torrent sites has already proven to be infective, so why keep spending on it?

arresting thieves doesn't stop others thieving, so why keep spending resources on it, eh!?

lol

Edit: Wasn't there a study that was done by a university proving torrenting for artists has been a good thing because of ease of exposure? but they all slammed the research and shot it down.
