7970 + 3D

Hi guys,
Yesterday my wonderful other half came home with a present, a new monitor for me seeing as i'm currently using a HDTV out of the guest room.
The monitor in question is an LG D2343P 3D, now i've never tried 3D before and haven't really got a clue how or even IF this will work with my 7970 and games such as BF3 etc.
I've been under the impression until now that you need 3dvision and a nvidia card but a quick google suggests otherwise?
another confusing point is if i need a 120hz monitor or not as i don't think this is, and what is TriDef and do i need it for gaming?
Basically i'm looking for any info/advice from 3D gamers on if and how i would get this to work with my 7970.

There's more than one form of 3D.
Does the Monitor come with Tridef?
My only concern, and the likes of Tommy will confirm this, is Tridef is pretty CPU intensive, I'm really not sure how your CPU would cope.

I use a 120HZ monitor and Tridef for my 7970 (Active)

You'd be using I assume 60HZ Passive 3D?

3D is great and Tommy loves it. The bonus of 3D monitors is 120Hz (120fps) When I switched, regardless of 3D, games felt so much smoopther above 60/70 fps.

Yes the monitor does come with Tridef, is this a good thing?
I believe the monitor is 100hz, i maybe wrong though.

Then you should just be able to set it up with Tridef (And I assume the monitor came with glasses too) set it all up and off you go

Install the one on the CD and then download the latest full none OEM one.

That is a 60Hz passive 3D screen. I had 3 of them for Eyefinity 3D and it was pretty bad to be honest. Because passive 3D rendered every other line it made text in games unreadable for me. The version of TriDef that the screen came with is not good so I went ahead and bought the proper, full version.

After a couple of days messing about, I took the screens back. Not because of the 3D but because of the visible horizontal lines on the screens on any block colour.

It's fun for a while but the passive tech just isn't good enough. If you want to do 3D, get a good 120Hz active 3D screen.

You don't need to buy the full thing, you can install the full version over the OEM variant on the disc.

It was never my intention to go 3D tbh, but seeing as the mrs got it for me i thought i'd give it ago

Unfortunately the Active 3D screen as out of my price range at the moment.

So it's just a case of installing the version that comes with the display, then downloading and install the latest version/trial and i won't have to activate it?

Yes, install the newest one straight over the top of the original one without uninstalling, that's how the license works, it reads the LG license from the install.

Martini has about summed it up, you may have some issues due to the cpu intensive nature that Tridef can bring, but it is very rewarding-if you actually enjoy 3D gaming.

Tridef does have it's moments from time to time with poor performance using CrossFire but that's not an issue for you, but most of the kinks can be dealt with.

Your LG is 60fps passive, but shouldn't give you brain strain as much as active.

Crysis, sore on the senses, it looks great, but I was getting a shimmering effect, maybe have to play about with the settings and there is a considerable performance hit too.

The bad bits:

Brain strain was quite pronounced when I first started using the 3D, but last night it wasn't anywhere near as bad, maybe because I was just playing a game instead of testing(jumping back and forth between titles in 3D to desktop and back again), etc.

EA games are looking to get authorised when launching directly from Origin(probably without Origin too) via Tridef game launcher, not good as it's going to take activations away from you, could cause problems further down the line.

Some titles are Stunning imo, Skyrim in a snow storm has to be seen to be believed, Crysis 3 is on a different level using Tridef than the ingame version too(but heavier hitting).

Unreal Engine games are usually great too.

The best bit of advice I can give you though is don't jump in and have a 2 to 4 hour gaming session not being used to 3D gaming-build up your tolerance over a few days or migrane/vomitting is very possible, resulting in you not enjoying 3D gaming from the off.

So by all accounts it should looks pretty cool on my monitor?
I shall heed your advice in regards to length of gaming to begin with.
I really can't wait now!
Is Tridef hard to setup?
Just had a look at the review you posted over at Tridef and it appears that the monitor he's using is the "D2342" where as mine is the "D2343P" unsure on what the difference is.
I'll have a look now.

Very intertesting reading inside that post at Tridef

seems it works fine for the most part with just things like crosshairs needing a fiddle (laser sight etc) Monitor should be with me first thing monday morning so we'll see how it goes

Laser sight is essential for proper aiming.

Tridef is easy, it's better at finding your steam titles than it used to be this time last year when you had to manually add some titles.

you just launch Ignition-double click your game and away you go.

Numberpad 0 is the magic key for ingame fiddling with the settings, convergance etc-pop out.

If you have heavy fps hit you can turn on Power 3D in Tridef, it's not a true 3D though and your 3rd person character has a fine shimmering halo around it, but fps are usually much higher.

The Tridef forum is good for help/game profiles(user made) and the devs have directly emailed me with answers to queries in the past via email.

Just an update,
Received the monitor this morning and now have it all setup, really impressed so far

Very crisp to look at and i world apart from my Hdtv that i was using!
Had a slight issue in regards to Tridef though... I was under the impression that it came with the display, but alas it seems i was wrong.
a chat to an LG techie on their website confirmed it.
I've downloaded the latest trial version though and gave Sleeping dogs a blast and it's quite something :eek:

Very cool kicking butt in 3D but i did find performance suffered with everything maxed out though, however disabling Tridef and using the games built-in 3D produced a much better experience in regards to fps, which were almost the same as 2D.
Didn't really have time to fiddle with all the ingame settings that come with tridef though and i'm sure that with a little bit of time, i could get it running smoothly.
Any tips on using Tridef would be great if anyone has them though.

I know when I bought TriDef last November i got a 50% discount due to having an AMD card. Download a wee program from the TriDef site, that checks your system, detects an AMD card and compatible display device and authorises the discount.

Think it was $24.99.

once i had the depth set right it was amazing, looks like you have the weapon in your hands

1 question though, is it better to use a HDMI cable or DVI-DVI for 3D?

Another thing i've noticed is that when using 3D my screen size is reduced, like if the scaling is out.
Is this normal with 3d?
