They are trained by, and franchised by, the manufacturer whereas the indy is not - which is the difference. Now we could argue all day about whether this actually impacts the quality of work but its not exactly difficult to see why a manufacturer would want to stipulate work on a car they cover under an extended warranty is done by people they train and authorise.

It doesnt work like that. It's completely seperate, for a start the dealer charging you for the work is a different company and isn't BMW. They are an independant company with a franchise to operate a BMW branded dealership.
You are paying Sytner, or Rybrook, or Cooper or whatever for your service work, not BMW.
Just come across this thread after googling for something else, but I just wanted to clarify from my experience of BMW warranties - if the OP has a BMW Insured warranty which can be taken out after the manufactures warranty expires (administered by a 3rd party company called Mondial - this is distinct from a manufactures warranty), they used to specify in their t&c's that you had to use BMW for servicing. They got away with it because EU law relates to new car warranties and does not apply to 3rd party warranties (like warrantydirect etc). However, Mondial have recently changed this, and you can now go to any VAT registered garage to get work done so long as you use genuine BMW parts - email them and they will confirm the recent change (even though your handbook says otherwise).
As previously mentioned, if you have a new car with a manufactures warranty, you can take it to any VAT registered garage for servicing and this will not affect your warranty.

Finally got round to replacing my brake pads and price dropped by £10 to £431.... Woooooooo!!! 
Didn't have to replace brake discs which is good because otherwise my total bill would've come up to £750 and that would've hurt....
For some reason I didn't think it'd be a service that needed the service book stamped, but it turns out that they do stamp it.

You must have more money than sense to pay that ridiculous sum of money for such a simple service operation.

Indeed. Those prices are more inline with what i would expect.
I know I paid a premium to get it done at BMW, but I still went ahead with it because I don't want to risk my BMW Insured Warranty (even though others have said that it won't affect it, but I just CBA with any hassle if it does). If I get it done at an independent garage then I won't get a stamp in my service book or my key/OBC service indicator reset, I don't know what garages are good and it may just cause me more hassle and headaches if something does goes wrong.
