Anyone ever become an atheist after believing?

For those professing to being a born again Christian for a short time and then becoming an Atheist, there is a world of difference between profession of faith and possession of it.

He was great and an ex boxer but it was during his time that I started to lose religion. I got dismayed by people making their own religious rules up (including myself) and the straw that broke the camels back was when he invited another church up from down South. There was about 30 of them and they camped out in the Church Hall and me and a mate decided to crash by going through a basement door we had keys for. Before going in we watched from a slit and it was an all out orgy :eek: I kid you not. The following day I questioned their leader and he just said that we were all children of God and it was OK because it was all love etc.
That was the moment (as well as other experiences) that made me realise it was a load of bull and I missed out on poontang.

Two tickets please, for me and Huddy.

I love the parable of the Sower. It goes like this:

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’

But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

So you reject Christ because some of his "supposed" followers engaged in an orgy? They obviously aren't true Christians if they're doing that.

That's amazing!! I didn't know they had dictaphones back then...

"Its called faith because its not knowledge"

In fact it's called Faith because its Trust. In Christianity (and other religions) Faith is not the same as Fideism, which separates Faith from Reason, most religions within Christianity reject this and maintain that Faith is informed by Reason and that Faith is attained through rational seeking of Knowedge.

Something that some people either chose to ignore or do not understand, religious and non-religious alike.

I used to completely believe in God. But then as I grew older, the main thing which made me lose faith in him was:

He decides to give us humans five senses, right? So when any of these senses are triggered you know automatically that what triggered them is 100% real and exists for sure. You see something, you hear something, you feel etc. and you know it's there for real.

So WHY OH WHY, does he decide to exclaim his existence in the form of literature? Limited to only those who can understand Arabic. Couldn't this omnipotent God see that half the goddamned population is illiterate let alone able to understand his frankly incomprehensible and complex teachings? I mean you have Muslims who completely misinterpret his teachings and go on to murder innocent brothers for goodness sake. What sort of God couldn't see that coming?

Every thread of logic in my brain tells me that God doesn't exist.

I keep changing my view on it was brought up as a Christian but as a kid would be continually asking my parents 'what if god doesn't exist', 'how do we know etc..'... used to get quite stressed by it when I was young. Was Christian as a teenager but then became more agnostic. Would say I'm probably either Agnostic or Ignostic now.

Vague 'belief' -> Hardcore Christian -> Agnostic -> Atheist -> Antitheist.

Hardcoreness came during teens when I was in a pretty bad place, I started to inadvertently drift away during University and eventually realised I didn't need 'it' in my life (as in, those feelings and emotions weren't there anymore). At which point I started slowly on a path towards Antitheist due to a combination of education and emotional awareness/reasoning.

main reason i believe no one believes in god anymore because in england all they go on about is evolution, its always on tv.. its even on our notes.

I did believe as a child as I went to a Roman Catholic school but I began questioning things around the age of nine or ten (just over twenty years ago now) so it's a little difficult to recall the specifics.

I know the main theme was that I was unhappy with the compulsion to do good rather than doing good from a position of free will, my belief just seemed to unravel from that. Thankfully my mother was happy for me to develop my own views.

When I was a child I was an atheist... Then as I grew older I accepted the belief that I am a man, a man who does not care whether gods exists or not.

My parents baptised me and tried to raise me as Christian but I've always been largely agnostic. I don't really have an issue with spirituality, but I'm fairly against all organized religions and sadly think a bit less of people who are true believers. If you can believe something like god having always been then it is not a stretch to believe the universe (or rather what came before the bang) has always been instead. It's essentially the same logic.

Atheism is basically a case of putting our best effort forward but I still find those without any doubt interesting. Oh sure, the arguments for not believing in anything when you have an absence of proof is fairly sound but in and grand scheme of things science is like a child's plaything when considering the nature of the universe, how the hell we are sentient, or other such deep philosophical questions.

I was born into a world of grey and when I die it'll still be a world of grey, so why the hell do I need to believe in anything? The only thing that has changed between me being young and now is I have a greater level of confidence and ability to explain my beliefs in the face of someone who'd have me indoctrinated. :)
