UEFA Champions League/Europa League 5/6/7 March *** Spoilers ***

Regardless of the result proud of the team, 2 games against Real Madrid and we've more than matched them both times; arguably the better side in the first leg, without a doubt the better side with 11 men tonight and probably the better side for the majority of the period with 10 men also.

wasn't Carlton Cole sent off aswell as someone else in the same game a few weeks/months ago?

both were rescinded am i right?

Yep, him and Gibbo.

So a clash of heads is the same as a headbutt then? Should both be reds?

First question, no. Just like Nani wasn't sent off for violent conduct, he was sent off for dangerous play. Second question, it depends on how the clash comes about. A simple clash of heads isn't dangerous play - if you go flying into a challenge at pace, the opposition player gets the ball and you smash your head into the back of his, it could be considered dangerous play and a red card.

No, intent matters quite a lot.
Not according to the laws of the game regarding dangerous play but carry on making up the laws if that pleases you.

And now all the stupid comments about different situations.

Seriously just get over it. Nani put the ref in that position.

He did look like he was consoling Ferguson at one point, Mourinhio will probably come out now and say it shouldn't have been a red etc etc and sound like a graceful winner and play the good guy (he can do that occassionaly) would have liked to have seen his reaction if they had lost and he hadn't been sent off :p

Its more about his comments after the 2010 semmi agasint barca were he said pep should be embarrassed of the cl wins he has becasus of bad calls by the ref.

I have no idea why anyone could think its not a red card, the intent is completely and utterly irrelevant, dangerous play is, it was a flying kick, what if Arbeloa stoops only a bit to head the ball and Nani studs him in the face. Its insanely dangerous, he made full contact with his entire body weight behind the ball.

Its a combination of things, standing still and swinging a leg at a ball and you accidentally kick someone is no where near as dangerous as, running fast, jumping and sticking your leg out to catch someone with your full body weight behind it. These wouldn't even be comparable, accidental or not its dangerous play and a clear as day red card.

Personally I think on reflection that Colo's kick on Ba and Crouches kick on Reid are red cards because they were too dangerous, but both of those were a swinging leg, neither were lunges, neither had the full bodyweight behind the kick.

Either way, before and after the Nani red Utd had gotten the lead and decided to play for the 1-0 win and stay back, the game already turned, Real already had a different gameplan and were already flooding forwards and already looked far more likely to win. If Utd hadn't withdrawn so much after they got the lead they might well have won, even after being down to 10 men.

Agreed. Was a great effort.

Retired referee Dermot Gallagher on BBC Radio 5 live: "[The decision was] harsh to say the least but in fairness the Real player did Nani no favours whatsoever. At worst Nani catches the underside of his arm, certainly not the ribs as the guy has gone down and shown.

"I can't reiterate enough that he [Nani] is watching the ball over his shoulder, there was no malice in him. At worst it was a yellow for dangerous play, but if I was refereeing that game I cannot se what stretch of the imagination where I would have sent him off for that."
