I'm looking to upgrade from my Phenom II 965 BE and crappy AM3 mobo to a suitable/affordable gaming rig but am wondering which path to take. Budget is around £275 or less.

Current specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo
OCZ Gold 4GB DDR3 (1333MHz)

So far I have this

But if someone can make an Intel build within budget and giving roughly the same performance with overclocking possibilities than I'd greatly appreciate :D

P.S The system does not necessarily have to be bought from OCUK, just names of products would be great, thank you :)

To be fair the op did say it doesn't necessarily have to be from here and you selected the wrong cpu on anandtech bench ;) plus just noticed in your spec it's an oem cpu which would require in additional cost to puchase a cooler/heatsink

LOL at the Core i5 3570K being £185 to £200 at many retailers. So in another year we can expect to pay Core i7 prices for Core i5 CPUs. Great!!

Its hilarious considering the Core i5 2500K could be had for as little as £150 around two years ago.

Firstly, you don't really need 1866MHZ RAM with an FX6300. Secondly,OcUK is expensive for AMD motherboards. The ASUS M5A97 EVO is a good motherboard for between £75 to £80. I would also look at the ASUS M5A97 EVO version 2.

The whole shebang will cost you around £215.

well you get still get 3570K for 150 quid... on offers.

Whats funny is that low end Core i5 CPUs,are actually cheaper than they have ever been since they were first introduced years ago,so its not even inflation or exchange rates.

It just shows you what happens, when people start hyping up things, retailers end up bumping up prices. It used to happen mostly with graphics cards, but now it happens with CPUs it seems in the UK.

Its blooming annoying!!

Having had a SB Core i3(now a Core i5),I wouldn't get a Core i3 over a FX6300,a Core i5,probably,but not a Core i3.

All the new generation engines, thread well, and my Core i3 was starting to hit limitations now.

Sadly, as good as this rig is, it's well out of my budget :(

Also, I understand that 1800mhz ram isn't really needed but as it's the same price as the 1600mhz for the same capacity, I thought it was a steal xD

Thank you for all the replies too, still deciding which way to go.

What graphics card is the OP using?? What is their PSU BTW??

Shop around.

I would look at the Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 and Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 (rev. 3.0) if you are getting an FX6300.

My mate has the earlier GA-970A-UD3 version which lacked LLC and limited his overclock to only 4.3GHZ,but with the newer versions around 4.5GHZ to 4.6GHZ is supposedly doable, although as with all overclocking YMMV.

Actually, what is wrong with the current parts the OP has?? Is the motherboard unreliable or is bad for overclocking?? It does seem to use an 8 phase VRM with cooling.

Is the RAM the OP using in dual channel,ie,a pair of 2GB 1333MHZ DIMMs??

If the motherboard is the main issue, you could always get a better motherboard overclock your Phenom II X4. One of the 970 motherboards I suggested should be fine in theory.

I simply want to upgrade to faster CPU and RAM with a little overclocking headroom (which I know the 6300 has plenty of). At the moment I'm mainly playing BF3, GW2 and want to play Planetside 2 but am having some bottleneck issues due to the CPU I have currently.
I've managed to find the FX6300 and Corsair but with the Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 that you suggested for a total of £235 :)

Change to an MSI board and get 2133 RAM.
