Microsoft fined €561m in browser choice lapse

I don't see the issue with having IE on laptops/desktops. This ruling is stupid.

Thats because apple had such a small share of the market. Have you read that article.

Microsoft abused its position of power, was asked to give users the choice and did and then subsequently removed it again. I have no sympathy, they have held back web browsers for years and they cocked up big time.

My sentiments exactly - Stinks of Euro Bureaucracy.

Apple should be fined big time

Apple don't have an agreement in place to promote other browsers. That's like saying you should be arrested for coming within 100m of someone else's restraining order.

Yes I agree that MS is treated unfairly! I wish they would bring out IE for OSX and then complain to the European Union!

Stelly

I always thought this was complete nonsense in the first place... Even more nonsense nowadays.

Stupid people shouldn't be allowed near anything but internet explorer... why would they even need a choice???

Ask my mum when she calls me at 11pm to tell me her "facebook" has stopped working... "I clicked the blue E but there's no facebook....!."

Fu mum.. FU.

lol.

Logic?

Microsoft were forced into this "agreement" as part of punishment for not promoting other browsers previously. Never seen Apple promote other browsers.

You have hit the problem on the head there. Thats exactly why they made this ruling. Most people didn't have the savvy to realise that IE was a rubbish browser so would stick with it. This meant that even though it was rather obvious that it was by far the worst browser, it had an almost unassailable market share.

Now that you can get online with pretty much anything with a screen these days, why not start fining everybody.

It was a stupid decision in the first place,

That is a joke.

How have chrome (google) got away with it. Even when on IE and on googlemail a box appears "this would run much better on chrome". The sane doesn't happen on hotmail.

Big fine.

They accidentally forgot to offer the browser choice for 13 months and get fined. I guess it's a small price to pay for not having the correct quality procedures in place to spot such an important omission. Bad luck, they'll know better next time.

Maybe Microsoft should be fined for not giving an option to install Linux instead of windows when you put the DVD in.

What about media player? Options options options.

Its ridiculous.

Why can apple get away with consumers having to use iTunes with their products?
