***The Official Sony Xperia Z Thread ***

I am not just going by what I have seen in photos/videos, but going by reviews by the big sites and other users opinions on XDA etc. the majority of them say the same about viewing angles and blacks.

Perhaps the display is just very variable? Like the nexus 4, some say the viewing angles are awful and the display is washed out, however, others say that they are one X good (and from the one that I seen, I would also agree with regards to the viewing angles)

As for the pictures of the youtube video, no idea. Unfortunately a lot of the other videos showing viewing angles are pointless as they have bright stage/office lights shining on them with reflections all over the screen.

There are loads of comparison Vids on yt, I always filter long and HD you get a better class that way, from my own in shop messing and Vids I'd say the screen is decent, on a par with my N4, in one vid it didn't look much worse than an ip5 and beat it in some categories.

I do think Sony could've and should've tried harder but the XZ looks ok to me if I was a cyclist, runner or was always dropping my phone in the toilet I would snap it up, the trouble is in this market 1st amongst "equals" can mean 20 times the sales of the 3rd or 4th ranked phones.

Going by videos and photos of the screen is daft anyway, the only real way is to see it yourself in a shop.

As long as the photos/videos are of good quality i.e. taken with a good camera and are being viewed on a good calibrated display then it gives you a good idea as to what it will be like in real life. Probably even more so tbh due to the lighting conditions of the shop.

It can show comparisons to other phones, but it's still no substitute for real, first hand experience. That photo you posted of all the phones side by side is a case in point, there is no way on earth the display looks that bad IRL.

That video is a fairly decent angle so it will look fine. The typical LCD black levels do show up the on screen menu though which is always a shame.

As for the viewing angles discussion, we do tend to discuss - in detail - everything about phones such as this. Just because people think the viewing angles are disappointing doesn't mean they think the phone or screen is rubbish, just that it could be improved upon. I'd like good viewing angles but I can live without them quite easily.

In recent years Sony have faltered quite badly in the smartphone market, their Xperia range hasn't competed with the HTC devices, let alone Samsung's Galaxy phones. In the K750i/K850i days before the iPhone, almost everyone I knew had a Sony Ericsson phone!

I do like Sony and would like nothing more than for them to do well, and they're closer than they have ever been but they've let the phone down in a few areas. At the end of the day, sub-par viewing angles aren't what will make or break the phone on the mass market; that's all down to advertising. They seem to be advertising quite a bit but their starting position is poor compared to the position the Galaxy S4 will have; coming off the back of the GS3's massive success.

In a world where the HTC One wasn't on the verge of release and the GS4 on the verge of announcement, I'd already have one of these.

Just took delivery of my first smart phone and am blown away and overwhelmed! Could anyone help me with these questions please?!

1. The pre-installed apps:

Video Unlimited, Music Unlimited, Track ID, Sony Select, Play Store, "Get Apps" these are on my home screens - do i pay for any of these? Are they any good? Or just immediate delete?!

2. Latitude app - on my phone i can see the phones location, is there anyway a user at home can track my phone? ie see my current location?

3. Sony Car, Wisepilot, Navigation - all pre-installed. Any good? Are they free to use?

4. Let's start PSM - wth is that?!

I will of course look through the essential app thread, but any that jump out straight away i should be installing? I am definately looking for recommendations for the best app should you lose/have stolen your phone it's just the essential app page is in the 400+ and it's going to take a while to get through!

Thanks to all that help and sorry for been a noob.

ivry - I'm glad you like your phone!

As for the pre-installed apps,

- Music unlimited is a spotify-esk service with a monthly subscription - £9.99 i think?
- Video Unlimited allows you to watch movies although i'm not sure if you can get monthly subscription. I don't know much about it as i removed it from the screen.
- Sony car seems to be a slightly modified version of Google navigation with a phone option.
- I registered with wisepilot through the phone and it's navigation software. I have not used it but it is a trial period.

Phone arrived this morning and now it's back in its box ready to go back.

Yuck, what was Sony thinking with that screen. Htc Titan is right only difference is the resolution.

The battery is pretty dreadful. The only things that have disappointed me with the phone have been the camera and battery, both of which are very poor coming from an iPhone 4.

Have you used Stamina? With stamina mode on, I've left the phone on idle for 10 hours only to come back and notice it drop by 1-2%, which I think is unbelievable lol. Even shorter idle times make a difference. Although I do accept that constant use does drain it more than I like sometimes.
