ultimately Spurs have it easier this year, Everton have clearly dropped out of the way, Newcastle have had a terrible year due to injury and europe coupled with years of debt and a small squad/wage budget..
that's not our fault.
most managers could've got spurs into the top 4 last year. redknapp got lucky by holding onto 4th (though not as lucky as arsenal did on the last day, when WBA's keeper essentially gifted them goals) but back then we had VDV, modric and king.
we're now bedding in a new keeper (who looks decent) have lost king (his time was up, vert is a fine replacement) have lost the flair of VDV and modric but replaced it with a more combatitive centre in dembele (a crucial signing, a better signing than modric in some aspects) and sandro/parker.
bale did have a free role for large parts last season, missed lots and hit the bar a lot. he's obviously worked on his accuracy and the rewards are coming.
AVB deserves massive respect for rising to the challenge, especially after how he must have felt after the chelsea experience.
first few games of the season were not pretty (playing with 2 holding mid's. more down to lack of options that choice) but he has made his mark on the team, personally and tactically, i quite a remarkable short time period.
at the start of the season, we were throwing leads away in the last 10 minutes. we're now winning or equalising in the last 10 minutes. shows progress and belief to me.
for all the entertainment and flair we had with VDV and modric in the team, it is worth remembering, there were more than a few times where we were completely out muscled in midfield. this doesn't happen so much anymore.
