Hi guys.

i downloaded a turn based strategy game (Armed!) for a laugh at the weekend and the mrs seems to enjoy them.

annoyingly this one only works on win8 and my gaming pc is win7 so i need a game that both of us can play together.

it would be handy if one was touch enabled as my tablet is an acer iconia w700 win8hp machine with a touch screen.

i used to like AOE2 many years ago and i see that is being released as a HD game soon. anything else in the mean time? a free one would be good

Definately the Total War and Civ series leading the way in these areas, and both have multiplayer. (I play battles on Rome with my mrs occasionally)
Not sure about anything touch-screen though.

cheers guys. touch isnt a definite as im sure many windows games havent thought of incorporating it yet. it is nice to use on a touch screen though

i just want something different to Armed! so we can play on 2 machines, since armed! is only win8 and my gaming PC is win7. plus, taking turns makes games last much longer than RTS

we installed age of empires online but it seems to have lost its roots as i used to enjoy AOE2 many moon ago.

another question.

i much prefer the style of building a castle/base and then getting wood, gold etc.

are the total war games more just battle strategy? can i build castles, hunt for resources and upgrade buildings etc?

The Anno series is good for what you decribed..

I have 1404 (and i love it), 2070 also looks very good..

Appearntly Anno Online (free) is in the works, so keep an eye out.

It's a bit different. Only the battles are RTS - literaly 2 armies clashing in real time. There's no building or resources (unless you count limited ammunition on ranged units lol)

The campaign is turn based but I don't think you'll be playing that much as they're nearly all single player - though Shogun 2 has a multiplayer campaign.

Again not really resource gathering. It's all about setting up trade wtih neigbouring nations, taxing the populace, etc to get gold to upgrade buildings and build armies to conquer other cities.

CIV has a resource gathering aspect in that you have to ensure certain resources (iron, cotton, horses etc) are within your city borders with the right improvment built on it and ensuring it's worked by your cities workers. They're unlimited however, so it's not a live - "unit go collect this" kind of thing...

Neither of these games are really anything like AOE in any way. You'll have to look at the latest versions of that game or Empire Earth etc.

Some are missing the point I think he wants a turn based strategy. His missus found a type she likes so dont throw her to far to quick.

Ones iv enjoyed:
Total war everything (my favourite, but complex and not for everyone)
Civ series. great games!
Anno 2070. Bit more world buildy. But sucks up time like no tomorrow.
Company of heroes. Amazing!
Dawn of war. Similar to above but with aliens and space marines.

Would anyone recommend Stronghold HD?

When I was looking for reviews when it came out one video showed the building up stage and resource gathering. But I thought it was meant to be more about sieges.

what about starcraftII? any good? do you mine for resources etc? i kinda like going after certain materials and having a few to go after. like in AOE where you have wood and gold etc.

Starcraft 2 is indeed an economy game. You gather minerals and gas to build units. Once you have a sizeable army you either complete the mission, or kill the other player (if playing multiplayer).

The single player in Starcraft 2 is excellent, highly polished and addictive.

(Be warned though, Starcraft single player is like the gateway drug that leads to multiplayer addiction...)
