AMD getting revenge?

Its because physx runs on the nvidia gpu and when using a amd card it runs on the cpu. With a powerful cpu the physx we have seen in games should run pretty well but most would tell you that nvidia make sure cpu physx is gimped to make there gpu physx look better than it is.

The message is simply to buy a nv gpu if you want physx.

Well I agree but you could say the same for AMD... The fact is that physx is less in your face when compared to the TressFx issue with the hair... when you think about it should the CPU be able to handle TressFx pretty well then as well?

You can't say the same about amd because amd allow nvidia to run tressfx from there gpu's unlike nvidia who lock out amd gpu's to physx. The main reason nvidia gpu's struggle with tressfx is that nvidia this generation don't have strong compute performance compared to amd. Obviously titan is not included in my last statement.

AMD hasn't gimped TressFX performance on Nvidia cards though. Nvidia did that themselves by removing part of Microsoft's DirectX 11 API capabilities from their cards.

I thought that the 680s were good at folding or is that a different type of computation?

Absolutely agree that Nvidia isn't in danger. I can't see Project Shield being a huge hit but time will tell.

Nvidia isn't in danger, they are simply massive, but they are moving outwards from discrete gpu's.

They are putting money into the likes of project Shield and Tegra, not because they have to in the sense of here and now, but more because the days of desktop PC's in my humble opinion are numbered.

Apu's/Tablets/Mobile formats is where the future lies with 'miniaturization' being the key word.

I do want some TWIMTBP titles and I struggled to find any.

Afik, TWIMTBP is finished or put on the back burner and the emphasis will now concentrate with future announced titles to be part of 'The Geforce Experience'.

My point still stands. Any game that works on a console and gets a PC release, generaly works well on both AMD and Nvidia GPU's. The coding goes well above my knowledge and I can see your point but I can't see game devs alienating over 50% (I can't be bothered to find out how many AMD/Nvidia owners there are) of consumers.

Fair point.

Yes, and....

Folding = Stanford University, they have an nvidia based Supper Computer, they are predisposed to use Cuda and not OpenCL.
Folding just doesn't work on OpenCL, for whatever reason its completely bOrked!

Bitcoin Mining is based on OpenCL, its the same sort of thing, ask any Bitcoin Miner what GPU is best, they will tell you exactly the opposite to what a Folder will tell you. "AMD, avoid nvidia"

Everyone laughed and no one took me seriously when i mentioned small gpu humiliation the other day. Dark days ahead.

They possibly are, but when cpu/gpu's are combined, they should be very, very capable by that point and desktop PC's will be folklore or tech the grand kids laugh at.

AMD have an eye on it and are pushing that way already with their APU's while probably waiting in fear of Intel making a concentrated effort too.

All it takes is Intel to identify the market-if they haven't already, and it will be bye bye AIB's.

Fair enough, lets hope that nVidia get their act together with newer drivers, the company said that they were not given the game source code before launch to optimise the drivers for the game (which might have been AMD trying to get some good publicity with performance).

I was thinking that, why can't both nVidian and AMD just use OpenCL instead of them both having TressFx (AMD) and Physx (Nvidia)

Stelly

nVidia's claims on not getting the game's code early enough have been contested and said to be untrue, and as we know nVidia have certain difficulties when it comes to telling the truth.

But, it shows that someone's lying about it.

It's not going to change purely because of the hardware, but what looks to be coming is AMD putting a lot more effort in to developer relations due to their hardware being in all the consoles, as well as other reasons.

This will have a knock on effect if they keep it up because as we know, holding the performance crown doesn't necessarily relate to market share, though I believe it helps a bit with marketing.

I firmly believe the PC market will be going on for many, many years. Games sales rose something stupid last year on PC (something like 212%). The AMD/Nvidia/Intel road map looks good and the thought of playing BF3 styleeeee on a pad makes me shudder.

Part of that is down to digital distribution and outdated consoles though greg, I hope your right however I really do, but PC's had a hard struggle on their hands and thankfully pulled through, will they manage again?

Time will tell, as the new consoles will have digital distribution too, and gaming inputs will evolve to suit-Steam is looking into hand eye tracking so it's going to change in the long run.

Carbon copy of Crysis 2 imo in regards to changing code.

Crysis 2 ran fine on CrossFire until the way it was implemented was changed for last minute release code on request by Nvidia-AMD had zero access to release code=broken scaling.

Nvidia would have had the same access on earlier release, but AMD was never going to allow the TressFX code into Nvidia's hands, no chance would the first implementation be allowed to run better on competitors hardware ie-Titan.

How easy would it be to make a console play with a mouse and keyboard. If console life spans were to shorten and a mouse and keyboard was available i could see a lot of gamers switching over. A ps4 would put out better visuals than my pc. The only thing missing for me is a keyboard and mouse.

No doubt my boy will be getting a new console for Christmas.

If it's up to the task, then there quite possibly won't be an upgrade in my rig for some time as the outlay won't justify the pitiful upgrade in quality given the way things are going recently.

It's becoming harder to justify these days, so much power getting held back from the driver/DX level in order to entice/force upgrades out of us or make us shift to Xbox... :(

I so wish a secure dedicated gaming api was made for PC's to sit alongside the OS, it would nail anything a console can deliver.

At least we will be ok for 2013 :)

I will get a PS4 as well. Handy for some bedroom gaming late at night :)

Leave all quirky comments alone please ;)

Not to many games of the 50 i will be playing. I did put in for the elder scrolls online beta as i think that could be a game changer in mmo's. World of war planes could be good as well. I do like a bit of kung fu though so maybe try a bit of the age of wushu for a laugh.
