Just wondering what peoples opinions are. With new consoles coming out that will be utilising diffrent features and more of. Would current gen graphic cards be out of date quicker personally i think you should wait about an year and a half before purchasing one. Whats peoples thoughts?

If you're waiting on technology, you'll never buy anything. High spec PCs that exist today are already better than the consoles that are coming out in 2014. Consoles have a tight budget to hit, who as a consumer will dump £900 on an Xbox720 with the latest hardware for their 14 year old son? Nobody who earns under 30k a year that's for sure.

Buy now, you won't be disappointed. What's your budget?

Depends on the specs of the pc you are willing to stretch to. I'm building a rig this summer which will cost around £3000 so I'm hoping that will be fairly future proof for at least another 5 years or so (although upgrades will be inevitable).

So, if you get a high-end GPU now (such as an AMD HD7950/70 or an nVidia GTX-Titan or 690) then I predict that these such GPUs will last for another 2 years - I may be wrong, but that's just a prediction.

Don't worry about consoles beating a high end gaming pc performance either, that's just not going to happen, no matter how much a PlayStation fanboy rants about the PS4 having 8GB of RAM. Fact of the matter is that the PS4 will probably cost significantly less than a single high-end GPU of today like the Titan/690.

If you play the waiting game you could be playing it forever. There's always some new tech around the corner. A pc should be seen as an initial investment that you update as time goes on. It's an expensive game that you'll need deep pockets for to stay current. Any new console will struggle to meet even today's top of the line graphics cards let alone those of the future.

Ask yourself what games you play, how you play them and with who. Because ultimately this should decide whether you should buy a console or pc.

Definitely buy now not worth waiting, consoles are made on a budget. A mid/high end pc right now is better than the next gen consoles. If you don't mind waiting could see what Haswell got to offer but that's about it not worth waiting until November for next gen consoles.

I agree with this too - I was going to put off my build this summer to wait for the 700 series nVidia GPUs and the Intel Haswell micro-architecture CPUs, but then I just thought "if I keep waiting for the next thing, I'll never get this system built!"

Go for it now, current high end GPUs and intel CPUs are excellent and they will last you for some time to come.

Me personaly not looking to buy atm, i have told myself to wait. Was just wondering if people thought the same. You are right you could always be waiting but there is also a good or rather a better time to buy stuff. If you wait it out for a year or so dont you think you will get longer out of the card compared to a card pre released before next gen consoles

By the time the new lot of consoles come out their graphics will be current gen mid range cards at best. Even £150 card will play modern games at 1080p no problem.

In general hardware has overtaken games, so there's not much point waiting for the latest and greatest as something new will always be round the corner. You're best bet is to stick your budget up here and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you how to spend it all!

That is true, 18 months is a generous life span in the technology industry! If you can make your current hardware last that long without upgrading then great! If not why miss out on 18 months of great gaming fun for the sake of 18 more at the end of its lifespan:confused:

I doubt the new generation of consoles will have much effect on the PC games market. A lot of people are still making the move to 1080p and 4K is a looong way off for us consumers without very deep pockets!

Well put that is a good point actually.

I love consoles I've had every single one since the PS1 and will definitely be buying into next gen, but I know with my current pc I'm safe for the next couple of years and will be able to play at 1080p for a fairly long time. I knew about next gen coming out late this year but it just doesn't justify the wait, for me anyways.

With Intel releasing new chips in June and graphics card from both AMD and Nvidia in Q3 you can't really go wrong :p

Well you may want until l Haswell but other wise no. Like everyone says unlike consoles, new and better PC components come out every month.

EDIT:@dacads Beat me to it by seconds.

Its also dependent on whether as time goes on if you feel the need to upgrade everytime a new gpu/cpu comes along.

I built a new i5/gtx 670 build late last year.
My system prior to that was a core duo/8800gt.(5 years old, and it was the psu that eventually died)

Its a case of needs/wants tbh.

Personally, I would build the best you could afford now. As others above have stated, there is always something just around the corner...doesn't mean you have to latch onto it everytime.

Also, with the way economy is, trying to keep up with technologies is getting more costly.

The main problem with the pc/consoles isn't really the hardware, its all really to do with the multiplatform development that can on occasion lead to pc versions not being fully optimized.

You see, this thing they call "next gen" is what us gamers have been playing since 08. Dx11 was released in 2008, it's already 5 years old.

That's what I'm thinking. Save up and get a 3770k when I can.

I'm sure there will be a fair number of people only making the jump to i5/i7 when Haswell arrives as prices will hopefully drop

probably not the best time in all fairrness, what hardware games need to run optimaly is probably going to start rising quite steadily over the next 1-3 years, more so than in the last 3-4 years, also games ae likely to get more threaded, intel is all the rage atm but this time next year amd could be a better bet for the first time with there more affordable 8 cores. if youve got something capable atm id wait a year or so and see what happens thts what im doing. then again if you havent got anything, you might aswell, just probably not the best time to upgrade from decent enough hardware now unless it wont cost you that much!
