How two dick jokes exploded into DDoS and death threats - overreaction from the woman or not?

Sometimes when at work, you just know it was best that you kept your mouth shut when you did. These people learned the hard way by doing the opposite, and the woman really should've known better. How properly, totally and utterly blown out of all proportion this has got. Glad I'm not involved!

If I overhear two women making a joke about menstruation and I feel uncomfortable its still none of my business... I've got no business interrupting their conversation and certainly no business taking a picture of them, posting it online and labeling them 'sexist'.

"Oh my God, that presentation was longer than my last menstrual cycle"

OUTRAGE!

:p

I really detest people like her, that go out of their way to self police any such thing that offends them. You do see this particularly in IT with women because it is such a male dominated thing. Women feel they need to give it the whole "girl power" thing and stand up for women. Every thing becomes sexist and it's all about them.

Woman handled it poorly

Company handled it poorly

Especially the 2nd part.

The woman was clearly an idiot for taking offence in the way she did. Doesn't even sound like the jokes were sexist, to me. Pretty tame in any case.

But whichever company fires its employees for making silly jokes in public, is a company with issues.

Wouldn't the guy have ground for unfair dismissal?

Anita Sarkeesian was already a controversial figure before this. She embodies everything that's wrong with modern feminism. Then again she's basically a nobody if not the male reactions to her stupid opinions, so well done the people who made her a mouthpiece, those who don't agree with her.

because during the middle of a speech about how hard it is to get women involved in the world of technology and how it is male dominated, telling jokes about dongles and banging the girls there was not exactly smart. the tech world is mostly controlled by men and women have a hard enough time getting by in it without having dumbasses joking about it at what is supposed to be a progressive conference.

There's no barrier to entry for women that I can see.

They just don't seem to be all that interested in it. Or at least not as fond of gadgets and tech as us blokes. Why that constitutes a "problem" is beyond me.

How about this... the bin men I see collecting our trash each week are 100% always men. Ever hear women complain that they can't get a job as a bin-person? Nah.

Are we going to have to put up with so-called "positive discrimination" type measures in technology now? So the PC brigade can feel better?

Immense amounts of fail here on all sides. Mainly the companies though, no need for any firings.

Some people really don't seem to know how powerful social media is. Posting this onto the web is utterly stupid; obviously what you do is talk to the people involved, if it is concerning you. Unfortunately, I expect we'll see more of this sort of blurring what should be private and what should be made public as more and more people become overly comfortable with sharing every detail of their lives online.

Whether or not the jokes were offensive is fairly irrelevant although the fact that she is being rather evasive regarding details has certain implications. Clearly what she should have done was either dealt with the situation herself or made a quiet complaint to the organisers. Instead, she chose a cowardly route of broadcasting her gripes to all and sundry and then celebrating the punishment of the perpetrators. Reading her blog, she comes across as a particularly unpleasant person. And she appears to delete posts for detractors! It's a pretty pathetic story from all sides.

Within minutes, conference organizers saw the tweet and pulled the two men from the event for a private talk. One was revealed as Alex Reid

what is worrying is that she has no proof of the accusation.

i mean she took a picture, posted it on twiter and said what she heard. For all we know, someone could make up the 'dialogue' and put a photo and start a similar problem. People are too quick to jump the gun.

Take a picture of someone, make up a quote they alledgedly said, post it on the internet and watch them suffer..great

Exactly, where is the full transcript of the conversation?

Edit: Thanks for the image... I now need counselling...

The reaction she got is entirely the point she is making I would imagine.

It's not cool, not cool at all.

Personally I've always seen computers as being a nerdy pastime. Like sci fi I'd have assumed that made it quite outsider friendly.

I really don't like this whole bully/I've-never-seen-a-girl vibe big sections of nerd-dom are giving off at the moment.

If it was the point she's trying to make, that only makes her more stupid. The Internet comes will come down on everyone equally. She isn't being attacked because she's female, she's being attacked because of her actions and opinions.

This type of stuff is common. I stopped counting the threats I was getting when I was a teenager. I've seen all out hate campaigns on kids that were quite frankly disgusting. It's almost always young males being attacked and I've never seen it make the news unless the kid kills themself.

On the other hand the fact she's a not totally unattractive female probably plays a part in the amount of white knights defending her. If she really wanted equality she would be attacking her own defenders asking why they don't jump to defend young males being attacked by 4chan, etc.
