Origin passes 40million member milestone

Valve games are Steam exclusive, EA games are Origin exclusive. The fact that Steam has a Monopoly on digital distribution suggests that they are anti competitive more than Origin. All non EA games bought from other places only seem to activate on Steam from what ive seen (I could be wrong as I mentioned earlier im a bit new to pc gaming) why is there not a choice?

Steam has a monopoly because it's a good service? I don't agree that it's fair to force people to install anything like Steam/Origin/GFWL/uPlay etc. simply for buying a game but to put Valve on the same level as EA is just downright unfair.

Valve have tried their hardest to keep Steam streamlined and good to use. With Origin, just like everything else EA does, it stinks of "good enough".

"Oh well that'll do, we force our users to install it so why should we give a **** if it's slow, or has a crap interface, etc. etc."

Steam has a monopoly because it was the first of its kind and because so many publishers are so keen on it. Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Tomb Raider, DmC and many more are steamworks. It is not necessarily because it is a good service but because it is a service I MUST use in order to play my games. That is the reason it is a monopoly.

Comparing two businesses that compete in the same market that both provide similar products/services is completely fair, there is no other reason to believe so.

Examples of just "good enough"?

Steam has its problems as well. Today I was downloading a game at 600kbps-1MB/s, with the odd spike here and there, compared to my usual 12.5MB/s. A game that should have taken less than 10 minutes to download took around an hour and a half. There is also times where I can't buy games because it constantly throws error pages at me, or when I try access the store or a profile page it throws errors.

I'm not saying Origin doesn't have its problems because I'm sure it has. I'm simply stating that Steam has its fair share of problems as well.

EA Origin is a download manager - launcher
Valve Steam is a way of life

Gamers are strange creatures, PC gamers even more. We have long memories and irrational fears.

Some of us are old enough to remember when steam first came out. At the time it was hailed as the death of free gaming and modding not just the mass marketing Monetization of everything.

Both companies are multi million $$ factories now but no one likes EA.
You can follow the history of valve, it has a face, it has Gordon freeman :P
EA has a none of the charms of valve or never did Its just Mega $$$ on multiple platforms.

back on topic - new gamers wont have this history and will just see 2 download managers.

Well I have 2 Origin accounts and have not used it since I finished Mass Effect 3 and do not intend to use it again for a long time!

On my main account which was the BF3, I have a list of about 20 friends - I only ever see 1 of my friends using it when I do go on. I have the identical friends list on Steam and 50% of them are on there at anytime.

I will echo other people comments in that Origin is not terrible, but is only 'good enough' and is frankly destroyed by Steam. Until they can hit critical mass with people actually online and using it regularly, then I feel it will never gain traction.

Just to clear it up before this goes on & on!

Steam is not a monopoly, market leader yes but that does not make you a monopoly.

The only possible monopoly they could have is on their own games, however as you can buy said games outside of steam, then activate the game for free on their free service, then even that becomes a bit grey, to be a true monopoly you would only be able to buy that game off steam, which then gave them the power to charge what they liked/above the normal rate for a AAA game on PC.

I hate EA and Origin. The only reason Origin is on my PC is so I can play certain games. Mainly BF3. The only thing Origin is used for is the exclusive titles, nothing else. I don't use the store, I don't use any of Origins features other than to click Play on my games. All my games other than BF3, crysis 3, need for speed most wanted and dead space 3 are on steam. I would never buy a game on origin if it is available on steam. Even in the past I have rebought games on steam that were once only on origin.

EA suck, Origin sucks but unfortunately it's a necessary evil for some mainstream AAA games.

I wouldn't call myself an Origin 'user' though, I am a steam user, so in their stupid statistics I am just a number as they forced me to use Origin for some games. Just cos they have 40 million users, doesn't mean they have 40 million happy users or users that would choose origin over steam.

Nothing to boast about is it really EA cos you are a skid mark in comparison to Valve.

I feel sorry for each and every one of those 40m people.

Why's that? I am completely happy using Origin so you don't need to feel sorry for me :).

I don't see why some people have so much hate for it. It's hardly an intrusive application and there are some very good sales occasionally. It's not that different to Steam and yet because it's EA, it's the devil's work in some people's eyes.

no one has actually given a valid reason for hating Origin. It seems that just because it's not Steam, it has to be hated...

Origin would be OK if it wasn't blighted by bugs/technical issues and if EA's customer support wasn't so utterly dire and shambolic.

I rang EA support once inquiring about i order i had made which they took the cash but didn't give me the game or any form of purchase receipt.... only to be told by some coked up yank

"Well everything's a bit craaaazzzzzzy at the moment with all of our big releases, it'll get sorted out, is that ok?"

Totally unacceptable answer and i flipped my **** at the fool

Origin has been fine, I only have bf3 and a free game on it. I don't see a problems other than when my account was hacked. Customer services were very helpful, took a couple of days to sort out as we had to wait on the hacker to log out of Origin until I could get my account back.

Games are expensive though.

I have never had any problems with Origin.

I think peoples hatred of EA (most of it it deserved) clouds peoples judgement when it comes to Origin. I could be wrong.

EA can do no right lol... When you get 40m users on whatever service you have I'll just shout you down about that too... Oh... Wait...

It's pretty impressive, contrary to popular belief they must be making games that people want and buy and obviously Origin is acceptable for them...

Not sure why people have such a massive problem with Origin.

On the sale note, is burnout paradise any good? Any other games in the sale?

Edit: I see it is the sale that was already on :p already bought some games in the sale.

Its not that impressive really, every EA account for any game ever was converted to an origin account, so thats my BF2/BF2142 and god knows if I made other ones growing up, concurrent users logged in is a better statistic, steam hovers 5-6million, Origin is a fraction of that with FIFA/BF3/Crysis.

it isnt contrary to popular belief they make games people want, they also just churn out a lot of **** and ruin elements of these games people want

That said origin is an okay service, no better or worse than stuff like Desura but light years behind steam

I use both, i like both, but Origin does give me better download rates compared to Steam, as a lot of gamers have also mentioned.

I would be curious to find out how many of these accounts are active. I have an Origin account; however I only used it the once to get a free game and since my latest build I haven't bothered to reinstall Origin.

This.

All what matters is concurrent users online at one time.

A. You could argue the same about Internet Explorer 6. It's functional, but who would use it unless forced to? It's slow and horrible to use compared to modern incarnations.

I assume you are comparing Steam to IE, as the Origin client is much better for performance. I've never had it lag, hang up or become unresponsive once whereas Steam does it somewhat often, and the download speeds have been 2-3MB above my actual connection speed every time I download from Origin, I'm lucky to see half of that on Steam.

My steam downloads are same speed as origin bar some big releases/sales, although got 12mb/s last night on Bioshock infinite, same I get on Origin, although we've had this discussion before so could potentially just be you.

Steam deals with a **** tonne more traffic from downloads.

Origin is a barebone client, store(which I find unresponsive and a few months ago it didn't even bloody display release dates inside the client for preorders) with a friends list.

Steam is a store, massive forum, mod database for many games and media being uploaded to it a lot and deals with probably 5-6 times the amount of users origin does per day, I think I can forgive its store being a little unresponsive at times likewise Origin, my library navigates/play perfectly all the time and the community features work well the majority of the time bar occasional lag.

Origin is good for what it is, a client to be used as an easy library for EA's games, they want to rival steam, they have far better knowledge of what is good but still have barely implemented anything bar a store.
