Does everyone get confused over their balance and card payments?

At work, a super large amount of calls are regarding balances, people come through saying they should have like 100 pounds in their account for example and their balance is showing -18 pounds so according to them our systems are blatantly wrong. There was even one person claiming our systems were wrong because they did not match with his spreadsheet.

I guess with the amount of people who get confused it means the payment system regarding pending payments should change but surely it's not that confusing?

Not only that but when trying to explain a customer and looking at the balances it then gets uber mindbogglingly confusing.

No, just go to my online banking, look at which DD's have come out and which are due. I'm fully aware of how much DD is going to be and round up a little to make sure. I'll pay any bills that aren't setup on DD by phone with a few days after payday. I then know that any money left in my account is mine to spend as I please and I have a very good idea of what's in there.

Some banks have terrible IT systems, Bank of Scotland is one of them. Either transactions taking days to come off, or not appearing, or small transactions temporarily swallowing up larger amounts of funds.

My RBS balance is pretty much always up to date irrespective of transaction type; and so far I've never been impacted by any of their system outages.

This, except all our bills come out of a separate account which I fund through standing orders.

Pay > Standing order to "Bills" account > Left-over is mine to spend

I'm sure the COBOL programmers who built the banking software keeping track of all this a few decades ago managed to iron out most of the bugs involving adding, subtracting and performing trivial interest calculations...

Tis unfortunately that you have to deal with these calls... its not that hard surely to read through the transactions though if you want to humour the callers and ask them to point out where they believe its 'gone wrong'?

No.

Guess some people are to stupid to know how much they have spent and are to stupid to see the
Balance XXXX
Funds available XXXX

With the second one showing your real balance counting stuff that hasn't shown up on the statement yet because it seems most companies do card transactions in batches rather than real time

Not everyone, but some people do. As mentioned I think the delays in them showing up is probably what throws a lot of people.

Sometimes I get confused over my balance because the charges take a while to appear on my online banking (NatWest). If I want the most up to date statement I have to go to my branch and ask for a paper statement.

For example, when I checked yesterday I still hadn't seen the transaction appear nor any money be deducted from my balance for my purchase of Super Hexagon from Steam 4 days ago.

Barclays online banking used to confuse me sometimes with its late updates. I don't even bother using it any more. I keep a rough mental track of my expenditure, and just spend until my card declines.

The only thing that got me was that direct debits come out of your account before a bank holiday, while standing orders don't appear until after. I didn't know this so when my mortgage came out over a weekend, but I didn't get paid, I couldn't pay for anything as I was overdrawn (but you don't get charged for that kind of overdrawn apparently). Sucks a bit, must get changed to a bacs payment..
