2500K longevity ?

I've had my 2500k running 4.8Ghz at 1.335vcore for the last 2 years and although it's an awesome CPU it has started to show its age in one of the latest games. Since it still sells for a good chunk I'm probably going to upgrade to an i7 Haswell when they come out.

But yeah the 2500k is one of the greats.

2500K @ 4.8 and 680 SLI showing its age?
May I ask which game and at what Res?

Even with a 4.0GHz OC for example?

Doubt any will do that kind of speed apart maybe from a select few with extreme cooling and expensive motherboards.

Normal is anywhere between 3.0ghz and 3.4ghz.

At this speed though i would think a q6600 would perform pretty well for most things.

Heh maybe I won't upgrade, I've just got the itch and don't want to spend £900 on an extreme CPU.

Don't do it! Love your 2500K longer!

It is better than any £900 CPU :D

Also, I just remembered that mine has never been used at stock clocks. I put a quick 4.2GHz OC on it before it had even finished booting in my PC haha :p

Yeah, you want to see a good performance hit from your hard earned money. I upgraded my e8400 to my current 2500k a tad too soon a year ago, as I thought my ati 6950 was being slown down by my cpu. It wasnt at all, as I had hardly any performance gain when I upgraded to the 2500k.

I was a bit gutted as I could have kept my beloved E8400 system for a few more months or longer as it was a awsome system I built for myself.

My gaming desktop hs been running the 2500k at 4.5ghz since the month they were released.
Was a huge upgrade for me from Q6600.
I wont be upgrading the CPU until there are some major changes to Motherboards.. I only really embraced PCI-E, other than GFX, recently and USB3
So wont be changing that setup until USB4 ? Thunderbolt goes 100% mainstream PCI-E 4.0? DDR5,6,7?

OR...

I get the "itch" or something blows up :)

I too have been running a 2500k at 4.5Ghz since it was released. Only bumps in the road since then have been a change of motherboard (for free, thanks MSI!) to the B3 stepping, and the somewhat complicated process of upgrading to the very latest BIOS releases.

I plan on going back to uni in September so certainly won't have any spare cash to spend on a complete system overhaul. I see my 2500k lasting a long, long time :)

+1

Which game ? I play a lot of the decent new releases on my rig (see my sig) with no problems on max settings (1080p). The ones I don't buy I usually read up on them. I've never heard anyone say the 2500k struggles before, on any of them.

I got the 2500k @4.4 ,, only thing I would upgrade is the gpu. Son needs new rig so then I would buy latest chip but what I got is fine...

Also why is it showing its age,, is it cos it cant do 100+fps anymore? Just as long as I can run games smooth at mid-high detail, who cares about fps. This is why some people ppl turn to consoles because they think that you need to upgrade pc's every few months, and this is not the case, its just a lot of pc gamers obsess over fps.

I upgraded to the 2500k last xmas and the ati 3870 about 18months ago to a ati 6950 and I have no intentions of upgrading any of them in the next 2yrs as I expect games will still run smooth enough to play on mid-high detail even then. As I had my ati 3870 for 4yrs before I upgraded to the ati 6950.
