Epic fail?
http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/04/04/epic-playstation-4-pc/

Epic exec, Mark Rein, says that because the PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5 RAM it's like the bestest ever gaming machine evar, because 32-bit windows apps (not using the Large memory switch) can only address 2GB... so PC's are Losers

completely neglecting to mention that 32-bit windows apps on 64-bit windows can address 4GB, and that 64-bit native apps can address as much as they bloody want :D :D

still, if this drives game devs to actually create 64-bit apps then this can only be a good thing for gamers

But that's not what he's saying it's not just because it has 8Gb of GDDR5, you need to read the full unabridged version of that interview and then post.

I think his comments are in the context that you can actually target a fairly high end specification in the PS4 and use all of its capabilities without being hamstrung in any way by an Operating System, Direct X libraries and peeps running legacy hardware.

No need to worry about a million different configurations, there is just one.

It is "This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows" that got me. Most PCs yes, but most gaming rigs? I highly doubt that.

a bit odd that the writer in the forbes article doesn't think you can buy pc games easily through an "app like process".

obviously never been caught up in a steam sale.

When he said that it was in relation to what he said about the PS4 being next gen a few weeks ago.

What did you really expect with the mentality of most console noobs? (and devs) hell most of them still think their crappy xbox 360 is more powerful than a gaming pc.

pc footage is from june last year though (someone from epic also commented the DOF effect is the same on both so he doesnt understand why it looks different in that one shot near the start of the video)

Sometimes the ps4 looks better but overall the pc version even being an old one from june last year runs smoother and clearly has more detail textures/better textures in areas

There isn't a huge difference in IQ considering the infancy of the PS4.

The PS4 is missing the mountain scene and the PC is missing the Ice dude bursting out the mountain.

No doubt Epic will initially pour more effort into the console versions of UE4 though as I imagine they will push the versions that provides the highest income.

Maybe skipping a generation of gpu's personally as the PC will probably initially only get PS3/360 ports and the PS4 will have better IQ at first.

epic will push the one they can get better graphics on if they still sell their game engines

Hello. I'm one of the engineers that worked on this demo.

The biggest changes actually came from the merging of two separate cinematics, the original Elemental and the extended Elemental we showed at PS4's launch event. Each had different sun directions and required some compromises to join them. This resulted in some major lighting differences that aren't platform related but were due to it being a joined cinematic. Another effect, in the original you could see the mountains through the door where in the merged one we made the view through the door white since the mountains outside were no longer the same. Same deal with the mountain fly by. The old mountain range doesn't exist in the new one. These changes from the merge make direct comparisons somewhat inaccurate.

Feature wise most everything is the same, AA resolution, meshes, textures (PS4 has tons of memory), DOF (I assure you both use the same Bokeh DOF, not sure why that one shot has different focal range), motion blur.

Biggest differences are SVOGI has been replaced with a more efficient GI solution, a slight scale down in the number of particles for some FX, and tessellation is broken on ps4 in the current build which the lava used for displacement. We will fix the tessellation in the future.

right but its not next gen is it? especially in regard to PC gaming where things like steam have been around over 6 years.

hell i dont even think its "next gen" compared to the current consoles. isnt that what the xbox store and ps3 stores are about? simple quick content delivery?

theres nothing "next generation" about simple app purchases is what im getting at.

The way the 360 and PS3 have the process set up for downloading games is like a PC you have to download the whole thing before you can play it and it can be really slow on the current consoles, but the PS4 will let you play the game when a certain amount of it has been downloaded.
That's next gen

You can also do that with adult movies that you download from bear share or Ares.

EDIT

That's what Tommy told me anyway, ahem.

A next gen system that was implemented with WoW how many years ago?

The noobs are strong in the comments section.

still thinking an xbox 360 is better than a pc

one comment made me lol, "it will take 6 years for the PC to catch up with the ps4" LOL

"They have always surpassed PC's for at least a short amount of time each new generation of consoles, The 360 console was about a year ahead of PC tech beck in 2005"
