I wish they would learn. We will never need to use our nukes. The whole point of them is to prevent conflict (specifically nuclear) through mutually assured destruction. When will these idiots learn the benefit is just in the fact we have them and could use them if needed.

So what do you guys think on this matter?

I understand what you're saying but some of the users on their who have posted that it's a waste of money which could be spent on healthcare, education and paying of debts i'm inclined to agree with.

It's a just a shame that we have to put nuclear war deterrents ahead of health care and education.

But not having that deterrent put's us ever reliant on the US for protection. it also would make us an easy target for other nations who have Nukes, they threaten us with them and what do we do then?

Military Strength is just as important to a country as Healthcare and Education. It's sad that it has to be this way, but that is the way of the world.

Lets put it this way if we didn't have those deterrents we'd probably have no need for the Healthcare and education due to the fact we'd be destroyed or invaded.
 
People who comment on the BBC News website are extremely left wing. Or rather the left wing comments gets +1'd like crazy and the even the vaguely right-wing ones get voted down like crazy. Also the Editor's picks always seem to tally with the sites left-wing agenda.

If were "never going to need to use them". Can't we just "pretend" we built them and spend the money on something else like the flailing economy?

Its the US's nukes in the first place, so we are reliant on the US for protection.

Either way, if we do develop new submarines, then the likelihood of the Chinese or something, stealing all the blueprints and information.

So we can waste all we want, while other nations play catch up, push us to the side and we're just sitting there because the US doesn't actually give a damn.

theyre a waste of money. whos gonig to use them seriously? you cant just wipe a country out, other surrounding countrys will suffer the effects, from the radiation blown to them along with other means.. they will never get used without causing world war 3, so why not just limit everyone to not having nukes and be done with it.

erm there are about 8 nations who have nukes.. the rest haven't, yet they are all ALIVE and KICKING..

we should get rid of our nukes, pay US fraction of the money towards NUKES that way we would have the NUKES if needed AND spend money on useful things like propping up MPs' PAY and increasing budgets for second home allowances.
 
I'd rather we prioritised the sky-rocketing child poverty levels over a nuclear deterrent in these times of austerity.

I guess I'm a left-wing loon though.

Are you for real?

Even though countries WITH nuclear weapons (Israel, for example) absolutely hate Iran, they haven't used Nuclear Weapons against them. You think another country would randomly destroy us if we didn't have a Nuclear deterrent? They would be wiped off the face of the Earth by every other nuclear capable nation.
 
No one is gonna nuke us if we dont have Nuclear weapons.....

Seriously the days of the cold war are over.

I wish we could have a referendum on Trident so us normal humans that don't want to live on a planet were M.A.D at the price of education, healthcare, infrastructure, welfare and even Art and culture are all second to being able to create 20km2 piles of ash and glass..

Just for one second think how utterly ridiculous it is.

Take 20 years out of being a nuclear power, come back to the table then and decide if we need them then...buy them off the shelf from the USA or France or who ever is in charge then...

In the mean time we can be threatened by anyone because quite frankly No one sane is going to use them and a mad man will use them regardless of what happens to hsi country afterwards..

Its complete BS. China will rule the world in 50 years time and i bet the USA will be the crazy ones starting the End of the world in some small man syndrome pre-emptive strike so we can all play MadMax.
