HELP!!! Lesson learnt on Vauxhalls

I'd have the superb over that A4. No point in lumbering yourself with early 2000s technology just to get 4 rings instead of a Skoda badge. You have to remember that the B7 A4 (2005-2008) is the same car as the B6 (2001-2005), albeit with different lights.

You can just about squeeze a < 80,000 mile Audi A6 (4F, 2004-2011) in budget, but it's going to be older, and potentially worse specced (most have monochrome display/nav), but you get that all important "prestige" badge.

I think sometimes, we've gotta ask ourselves do we post to humour ourselves, get our opinions validated or to actually try to help the OP?

'Don't buy an Audi' says the guy driving a new 4 pot 4 ringer :p

Let's look at some facts:

1. OP already owns TWO diesel cars
2. OP says 'do not want to be part of pipe and slippers brigade just yet'
3. Motors continues to recommend Superb which OP has ruled out
4. History shows OP will have already have narrowed decision to a particular brand/image/function before post is made

Car purchases are typically emotional decisions; give yourself a pat on the back if you fired up a spreadsheet, worked out the costs and are still happy with your purchase because it hasn't worked out for me yet :p

I predict OP is going to end up with:

1. Another Vauxhall or
2. A badge of some sort

Thus I posted a lower bracket newish looking A4 with, all things considered, low running costs.

Would I buy it myself? No but who cares? OP has to make his own mistakes and all we can *really* do is limit the severity of what we might view as the mistake.

As you were :)

Can't add anything other than I had an astra for 6 months ... I had the head gasket go, it was replaced, still leaked coolant, starting was an issue sometimes, multiple sensors went, coilpack went. It cost me on average about £150 a month to keep it running, piece of junk! I'll never buy another Vauxhall as long as I live.

Good luck on the car hunt :)

What's my owning a brand new A4 got to do with me not recommending an old (very old, regardless of plate, it's essentially the same car as a 2001 model), poorly specified A4, over a newer, better specified, Superb?

The Superb is far from pipe and slippers. I had an Octy before and the Superb whilst not quite as energetic and stiff is actually better to drive. Plus your rear passengers fit in.

This is partly true, However on writting the OP i concidered paying a bit more maybe up to the 9k+ to get something more flash i.e BMW/Merc etc etc.

After thinking it over, prehaps a Skoda is going to be more reliable and suit my purpose.

Also i'm not going back to a Vauxhall, while you might think that please believe me when i say i am literally scarred for life after these two!!! Its has been the worst 1 year of my life car wise, i've sunk £1000's in to them!

That said i took out the AA Road side brake down and they have covered 1 head gasket, 2 oil coolers, starter motor and alternator.

Seat Exeo?

You can't get a good one for the budget, and even if you could it leaves you in the same situation as the B7 A4 (given the Exeo is a B7 A4 with a SEAT badge), albeit with a slightly newer car for the money.

There are a total of 0 Exeos under £7,000, and a whopping 9 on Autotrader between £7,000 and £8,000.
