Hi

sorry if one has said this before but im just going to ask as i never get a real answer of fitness sites and bodybuilder at that.

can i ask how does one get beyond anxiety, im one of them people that and 24/7 of this and even in my own home i get it. I asked my doctor and im on tablets for this but just knocks me out at night lol i need to get to a gym and my doctor after i had a stroke told me i should get to a gym and get fitter at my age (26). im not one for being around people but really want to get to a gym and my doctors said if i go to one he will see if i can get 1:1 but due to my high level of anxiety im struggling on even looking for one.

so can i ask how does people on here that go to gyms or RL get passed this and live a normal life.

Stop caring. You're there to do your exercise. Headphones in, do your exercise, go home. You don't even need to look another human being in the eye. Chances are others won't even acknowledge you.

Face your fears, once you've been a few times you'll feel a lot more comfortable being there. I went to the same gym for 4 years and I barely to spoke to anyone, if you wear headphones people won't talk to you any way. For me the gym is the only place where life just leaves me alone.

If it helps, no one there will be looking at you.

People go to train hard and are too focused to notice anyone else.

26 and a stroke?

Assuming your doctor has cleared you for exercise, what do you want to do? Get massive, strong or run a marathon/do a triathlon?

The above posts are correct - few people interact with each other in the gym, and nobody activity engages in that sort of thing, so you don't have much to worry about, anyway. :)

yes 26 and a stroke lol i know bad or what.

thx guys for a reply. i will try it just walking around first in town see if i can get use to it listening to music see if i get my mind off it.

i just want to get from 16st to around 12-13st my real weight for 5ft 10 but get my body to how it use to be prity fast and strong but thin'ish as well. i know i will not be thin as i was but get some tone on the upper body.

i really asked this as were i live everyone knows each other and they all know my family background and hate it. so i get stared at all time think its what started my problem off the most.

plus in west midlands you more to get drug takers than real gym people.

would one know some good music one could listen to im not one for music

Just get hoooouge so everyone is scared to start on you. Simples.

No one in the gym cares what your doing, in fact most people won't even know your there.

If you're looking at weight loss you'll need to sort out your diet, it will make your progress so much easier.

Do you have any idea of what sort of music you like at all? I know lots of people who listen to rock while they're at the gym but then again in the cardio room it's much more likely to be dance music. Without having an idea of what you like in a general sense it's very hard to give decent suggestions.

It's easy for me to say and probably much more difficult to believe if you suffer from anxiety but most people won't care what you're doing in the gym. Generally people have their own problems so yours won't feature too highly on their priorities and if they do that's their issue rather than one you should be concerned with.

Mental blocks and social anxiety, is hard things to get over.

I used to be socially anxious... a lot!!

But through exposure and more exposure, you develop coping mechanisms and eventually you can conquer these fears.

It can be done, but you have to take baby steps and try. If you sit on the sidelines and never dip your toe in the water in ever increasing ways, you will never conquer this problem.

I speak from experience. Oh and you may not do them, but stay off hard substances too as they will just hinder your progress.

And the gym will help a lot. Start slow and build up over months, loss weight, get in better shape and that will give you some confidence and the feel good factor from exercise.

Good luck. It can be done!

i am on a diet = from 17st to 16st in a month the real problem is due to its in the family on big ness only one that is small is my mom at 10st and 5ft 4 lol its the scotish blood

i do little steps but get draw backs i only get out of this problem if something or someone hurt my kids like any father really. but that is the only time i've seen my self come out of it.

i ask as with this problem one always thinks ones being watched no matter what. and i seem to be the only one in my family that has this problem.

Watched eh?

No one knows this about me, but when I was young, I used to hide from sight (behind a car/van or corner), if a car drove past me or someone walked by..... I hated the feeling of being watched.

Obviously this was a total crazy neurosis, but I was super young.

Your get over it, but you do need to practice and expose your self to things that make you anxious.

Now I’m almost the opposite. I need social interaction having learned to cope with it, I know crave it.

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" comes to mind.

well i was one of the kids that was pushed out and every time i tried for some attention off people i got put down rite away.

i think this is why i get these problems but im the one that has made something of myself and not a low life like other that had that attention now everyone wants to know me.(this happens in family's )

i was one that only had a friend that was not real due to the way my family was so i never went around the streets with people just talking to myself really lol(nutter)

but yeah i think being 26 and having this is just kinda stupid as i tell the doctor and have had a lot of help from him. but having this problem for a very long time i think it kinda got to me a bit too much to just pass over kinda thing.

im great full for the reply's guys it really helps.

Then I'd start with with music from the 60s and 70s that your dad introduced you to, it's something familiar and that alone should help a bit to make you feel comfortable.

Hahahahah nice idea. Totally untrue though. Everyone is judging everyone else to different degrees.

Beyond looking to see whether their form is reasonable or not I'm afraid to say I don't give much thought to anyone in the gym apart from those I've grown to know and chat to regularly.

I'd probably liken it to being in a nightclub, most of the people there have other things to worry about rather than you. You might feel self-conscious on the dancefloor but unless you're quite spectacularly bad (or good) the chances are you're not being noticed beyond a cursory glance.

thank you for the reply's

i know people look but don't look as much as my mind makes out just in town who know me and family that just share like they never seen a normal person before lol

im looking into a mp3 play right now so i can listen to music my son has a few nice dance tracks and ill try some oldies.

im going to see if i can get a 1:1 just to get use to it try and get constable ill even tell at the desk my problem see if they will not be a tight butt and understand me as they should.

A friend of mine was anxious about going to a club. I told him that everyone is pre-occupied with how they appear. Once he remembered this, going to a club was easy.

Same applies to a gym. No one frankly cares. Everyone is pre-occupied with how they look or worried about how others look at them. I had a few years off from the gym and I was worried about going back. Obviously the first few times was tough, but now I am there 3-4 times a week.

you do get an odd stare or two at the gym.. yesterday for e.g. 3 guys were staring at my little brother and laughing at him(he is quite skinny but nothing to laugh at) which kinda pee'd me off and i felt like slapping one of them but ignored it and that was about it.. my little brother didn't even notice it! :)

tbh you should stop giving a F about it and just do what you want without caring of what others think :)

thx guys

its been a long time issue having people look at you just puts you off things quick. im gona give the music a try once i get a mp3 player lol. i will have a chat with the gym on Wednesday as its up my moms end the ones round my end i would not go as you can see there are too many steroid users.

im thankful for this help guys it really makes me fill better and knowing im not the only one that had this problem
