Don't buy the Sapphire HD 7970 OC BOOST 3072MB...

If you're expecting a reference PCB, that is.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-297-SP

Just got off the phone from Overclockers to explain that they have sold me a different card as advertised. The manufactures code should be 11197-01-40G as listed, which is a reference card but unfortunately the card I received has a manufactures no of 11197-03-40G. Thus, meaning a non-reference pcb and 2 8pin connections not 8 + 6.

Overclockers have agreed to collect the card from me but I'm really annoyed because upon purchasing the card I also brought the heatkiller waterblock for it from Germany, which is one it's way now. So Unless I find another ref pcb from a different brand, which I don't want to do, my block is pretty much redundant.

I've instructed Overclockers to update their website because I don't want others having to go through this.

The manager at Overclockers is calling me tomorrow to have a chat about some sort of compensation and hopefully something can be agreed because I wouldn't like to take my custom elsewhere but will if nothing is done because at the end of the day it's me that's having to lose out currently, through no fault of mine own.

RoEy

Be lucky you're having a manager call you. I got a GPU with grease all over it like someone went to burger king. I've spent over £1000 that day and no manager called me to offer compensation.

That's is one of the many reasons why I don't buy from here that much anymore. That one time ruined it for me.

OP, I have no idea why you'd choose Asus over MSI considering you want to watercool your card. MSI have one of the best policies regarding cooler removal and a great reputation for RMA procedure (Probably second to Gigabyte/EVGA). Asus don't.

I just said I like ASUS purely because their products have never let me down. I've had msi components before and have had issues so like anything else, you get 'put off' by certain brands. I'm not saying that msi don't do good products but I've been stung before that's all. Also, I am aware that they do offer the best policy for removal of cooler which of course is ideal for watercooling but still, I'm not keen. I don't know, maybe I'll have to bite the bullet.

That is absolutely disgusting. I've noticed their customer service has seemed to have gone south over the last few years. I purchased an akasa docking station a few weeks back and was sent a non-european plug for it, I phoned to let them know and the guy proceeded to belch over the phone, no apology about the plug or the belch.

I only buy from them because I know their relatively a short drive away so if it kicks off I like to go and see them in person for a nice chat.

I don't think they'll do anything for me to be honest and I'll either have to find another ref pcb or send the waterblock back which is a real kick in the teeth. If they don't do anything for me I'll never buy anything from them ever again.

Made me laugh though, the guy on the phone was blaming Sapphire, ha ha. Yeah and I suppose sapphire update the Overclockers website too.

No but Sapphire could have sent OcUK stock based on the model number listed on the shop page and its been booked into stock as that.

On the flip side I have nothing but good words to say about CS here;

Corsair 500R, Wrong colour_-_offered to have the wrong case picked up and another dropped off when ever I wanted

Corsair HX cable set, arrived as an AX1200 set TWICE, got many many appolgies (was Corsair marking stock up wrong!!) and was given a few games for my troubles (return postage refunded).

Tech Labs D5 pump + top arrived cracked, had a new one in my hands two days later (return postage refunded)

Single Zaward Golf III fan turned up DOA, was sent FOUR free of charge.

I could go on for a few more.

Had numerous items pre-checked before dispatch just to make sure they are what they are.

I don't dispute they could do with a little extra in the warehouse, but overall they have been fantastic for me, especially Bailey & 5UB.

Well hopefully I'll get a taste of their good cs then.

I will only buy from here now if I really need something I can't find anywhere else. Good luck and hope they fix your issue:)

Thanks mate.

Just be calm and polite when you speak to them, and speak to them in a manner how you would like to be spoken to, will get you where you want to be quicker :)

For the uneducated like myself – what is a reference version and what is the benefit? I am assuming better for overclocking but you know that they say about assumption…

A reference card is one that uses the PCB layout as designed by AMD. It doesn't really matter which one you buy or from which 3rd party manufacturer they are all electronically the same.

Manufacturers will tweak this design for various reasons such as custom cooling, overclocking etc. This makes the card non-reference or custom. In the OP's case he has bought a water block that fits a 7970 that is the reference design. He thought he was buying a reference design 7970 but is now (rightly) annoyed that the item that turned up is a custom card and so will not fit with the water block he has bought for it.

Yeah, I know the feeling mate. I got a HIS 7950 when it was on a daily sale about 2 weeks ago. It came with the box having tears on it, then when I opened it, the card had finger prints all over it :o

I contacted CS via the forums and when someone did reply in the end they just blamed the manufacturer. lol. I mean common, did they not see the tears on the box before sending out?

Still to this day I am waiting for them to get in touch regarding the purchasing manager speaking with the manufacturer regarding the issue..

The good news is the card works fine and I could not be bothered to send it back and be out of pocket myself for them to send me out a new card. Then again I recall them saying they would send another only if they found this one faulty. But surely I am within my rights for them to send me a new one if I had wanted, as that is what I paid for, a brand new card!

On a side note, I love how when I have pre-sales questions the CS here respond lighting fast, but when I have a after sales question it gets answered the next day.

I could go on about other negative experiences I have had here in the past, but that would be petty. In light of this I would like to agree with the following post:

I will only buy from here now if I really need something I can't find anywhere else. Good luck and hope they fix your issue:)

Chill. Mistakes happen and I am sure things will be resolved. At worst you will receive a full refund, but delay with the RMA process is rather annoying (unless OcUK show some excellent CS and send an equal/better replacement in advance). You would have had the same issue if the card was correct but arrived damaged/faulty. May sites show old pictures and model numbers because they are either unaware of changes or are too lazy to update them.

Well waited till 5 today but didn't get a call so I called them. Was on the phone for over 20 minutes being passed from pillar to post and still never got to speak to the manager so was told to use the complaints web form on their site so I've done that.

Was thinking of buying a pre-built rig for my son here and these sort of stories are putting me off. I feel confident enough to build my own now but it doesn't really work out much cheaper and you don't get a full warranty . Talking about CS , my current rig was built by a small competitor who I was 100% sure was OK , turned out rig was shipped with faulty stick of ram and a nonworking oc. Took a month for them to send me a new stick and in the end I got fed up with calling them so went on the rog forums and oc'd the damn thing myself , best thing I ever did !

Generally speaking, the CS here is great.
Hiccups do happen, but I wouldn't let a couple of negative stories turn you off when there are many, many more positive ones.

It does seem that some of the guys on the phone aren't as on it as the ones on the web service though.

How about the time when I ordered a couple of fans and received an alternative pair with horrible colours due to a stock booking in error and OcUK offered to collect them free of charge for example?

Oh, If you're looking at comparing pre-built costs to custom, post your needs in the general hardware section and watch the £'s fly off ;)

This. I find i normally get cut off when i phone up. :D

However 5UB and Bailey are excellent help on the forums so just try and go through them whenever possible.

It's usually one of those two that sort me out, every time I get it sorted and feel well looked after in the process.

The problem with people is that they like to moan, especially on the internet as they dont have to deal with saying it to peoples face's.

When one person has a bad experience they will actively tell people and exaggerate to try to ruin a company's reputation even if they are the 1 out of 1000 who had a bad experience. When people get a good experience how many people do they tell about it?

Op seems like he wants to moan tbh.

Anytime I had a problem with something I got from OCUK it was sorted immediatly, the fact you can get 24/7 support online and free shipping just by posting 100 times is fantastic.

My mate bought a monitor from ocuk, he didnt do his homework properly and took it back the next day and swapped it. no quibble, no questioning he just said what happened and showed the receipt and it was sorted there and then. Ive been into ocuk before to buy some stuff and I had some things on a store pickup order, I asked about when my store pick up would be ready and they bumped it straight to the top of the que and I had my stuff within 30 mins.
