Losing weight at home. Does this sound good?

I'm over-weight and want to start doing some beginner workouts at home so I can start shedding some pounds.

From looking around online, bodyweight exercises seem to be the best bet and I came across this routine which you do 3 times in a row.

20 Bodyweight Squats
10 Push Ups
20 Walking Lunges
10 Dumbbel rows
15 second plank
30 Jumping Jacks

I also have a dumbbell set but I don't know if bodyweight exercises are more beneficial?

Does the above routine seem ok and something to build on as I improve over time?

Cheers

Do you have any equipment?

For pure weight loose you need some HIIT mate and operate in a calorific deficit. i went down the Insanity workout for my HIIT cardio, i managed to loose 20kg at home, that programs not for everyone but what ever one you do just got to make sure you stick to it consistently and you will get results

The only equipment I have is dumbbells. I'm a complete noob and don't really have any idea where to start at all, I just want to lose some weight.

What's your diet like? You can't out train a bad diet.

My diet is something I'm also in the process of working on. Right now it's pretty awful with lots of processed food and sugar, but I am well aware of what I need to cut out and replace.

The above workout I posted is just a starting point and from the website I took it from, their are options to increase it as you improve and add weights etc, just wanted to know if it would actually be worth doing.

Cheers

Sure that would be worth doing, make sure it is high intensity tho, do all that, rest for 30 seconds, then repeat

If you're stuck with bodyweight stuff, look at Ross Enamait.

Also, get a chin/pullup bar, something to do dips from and prepare your angus for pistol squats and single leg work.

It's better to join a gym and not be limited by poor spinlock dumbbells.

Otherwise skipping rope +body weight circuits +better diet

I was just reading about online and came across an article that states dumbbell routines are better for losing weight, but I do realize that their are MANY different opinions in this industry...

dumbells imo are terrible for losing weight, great for putting on weight though in terms of muscle mass.

losing weight is roughly:

75% diet, 20% exercise and 5% detox

therefore diet is 4 times as important as exercise is (detox is directly linked to diet).

cardio is the best exercise for losing weight, especially one which gets your heart pumping hard, makes you dripping with sweat within 15 minutes, running and skipping imo are 2 of the best.

activity is also important, no point in trying to lose weight by going to the gym for 30-60 mins to do cardio if you then spend 10 hours sitting down during the rest of the day ( a lot of people sit whilst at work and then sit when they get home). try and be as active as possible throughout the day.

try fasting (leangains.com), try skipping meals here and there if you do not like fasting. basically if you get your diet sorted the weight will fly off, if you don't you will be overweight forever.

No its not, it's just as (if not more) easy to lose weight with resistance exercise.

I still recommend joining a gym as you'll need an induction of people showing you how to do stuff properly. Also if you're overweight you'll probably struggle with bodyweight exercise.

you keep saying weight, when i guess you mean fat

there is nothing wrong with putting on some weight (if its muscle mass)

weight resistance is not terrible for losing weight, as more muscle mass means more calories burnt at rest

imo, its a balance between all 3: Diet, Cardio and weight resistance work

However, the answer to the OP. You are better off doing anything, than doing nothing. So find something you enjoy doing and stick to it as a lifestyle, not a quick fix

This is the exact reason I just end up giving up... So many difference of opinions, people telling me I'm doing something wrong, or whatever I'm doing is a waste of time... etc...

I really enjoy using dumbbells and I feel it's something I can fully commit to. I have a feeling I'd get super bored of bodyweight exercises after a short amount of time.

Ideally, I'd like a 3 day routine for weight loss that just uses dumbbell exercises. Can anyone suggest something?

And in terms of joining a gym, it just isn't practicable for me at the moment due to finishing work late and having no transport.

Cheers

What do you mean by detox exactly? Also, read this - The Hierarchy of Fat Loss by Alwyn Cosgrove

I don't do any dedicated cardio other than a commute to work that involves walking at various points, and I occasionally jog to the gym and back. In June I was a 33in waist, now 28in, 99cm chest, now 87cm etc.

It's all about diet. Both the intake level required to meet certain goals - fat loss, muscle gain, maintaining what you have - and the composition of the intake to facilitate preferable body recomposition in terms of growth/repair, and energy levels/performance etc. 'Move more or eat less' - it's much easier and more time efficient doing the latter.

The thing with weights is, physical changes come from challenging your body and forcing it to adapt. DBs are fine, if you have access to increasingly heavier ones, since any routine based on resistance is pointless if you can't up the weight once it stops being challenging.

In 60 mins of cardio you can lose 6-700 calories, that's a massive deficit if you continue eating 2500 calories a day. You could easily sit on your arse for the rest of the day and still lose weight.
