Racism in Online Games

I seem to see a lot more of this than I ever used to, particularly in things like COD or BF3 where the knuckle dragging idiots seem to gather. It's always been annoying when it happens, but these days I find it particularly aggravating as more and more it seems that whenever you call these people up on it in chat, a lot of other players just tell you to stop "whining" as though that kind of behaviour is acceptable.

There isn't really anything in the BF3 ROC regarding racism in-game, only with respect to clans/platoons or names.

The most telling thing on this subject was this:

http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654489714335818/

So it seems the BattleLog admin were more bothered about the upper case text the guy wrote rather than his (presumably) legitimate concerns.

I suppose this is a downside of playing online games - you end up mixing with complete scum you wouldn't dream of associating yourself with in real life.

EDIT: Would it be an idea to code something into a game to prevent certain obviously unacceptable words from being written in chat? Or would this be a form of censorship too far?

It's funny, I'm wondering why I wouldn't give two ***** if someone called me an ugly Brit. And I'm fairly sure that no one would call it racist. It's like people have such huge inferiority complexes about their own race that they're ashamed of themselves. Have some confidence in your own race such that you don't need to go and cry about it if some scumbag denounces it.

I'd be inclined to agree with you. Take away the aggressors only weapon, words, what have they got?

I couldn't give a toss what plebs online say about me :p

That battlefield forum post response is disgusting.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Andy, i would take a screenie and chuck it on reddit/imgur. I'm sure it will get plenty of publicity in no time, which could only be a good thing.

PS. Are you the AndyT from SMS? If you are i'll leave it to you to post it on the SMS forums, if not then i'll copypasta your post over there soon

Wow that response is shocking!

Unfortunately more children are starting to play PC's now, won't be long till the new consoles are out and they'll go to them and take their potty snouts with them.

If it's not racism, it's intentional trolling, if it's not trolling it's people swearing at you every time you kill them and they scream hax0r. Some online communities are pathetic and it puts me off playing certain games. I particularly hate servers ran by admins who think they can do as they please. If I remember correctly someone called out one of the dayz servers ran by OCUK members where the admins were racist and intentionally trolled people, also banning without reason.

Calling somebody an 'Ugly Jew' isn't racist, Judaism is a religion not a race. Same as when people insult Muslims, that isn't racism.

Not racism sorry.
Same as you ugly brit or something isn't racist.
Just because the word jew was used in a bad way doesn't make it racist.
Don't agree with the reply though...thats just stupid.

some of the things ive been called + things about family etc on BF3.. are things u couldnt even imagine but absolutely hilarious at the same time.. and i aint saying what country there from but lets just say its a East of here and near africa :D

The problem here is you're assuming the term 'racist' has any meaning and then getting 'offended' by it. To fix this problem, try not to get offended by words. Whenever someone says they're offended all I see is the human ego begging for other people to see their point of view. Almost as if they're completely unaware they're on a planet floating through space. To educate yourself further, read 'The Tyranny of Words' by Stuart Chase and learn about the semantic discipline and human behavior.

Oh for God's sake, people need to learn how to read a post and get the right end of the stick. I'm not suggesting religion related insults are racism, neither do I want to get dragged into that debate. However that kind of insult is still unacceptable for a civilised human being. Out of all the things in that OP, people are really fixing on the religion/racism aspect?!

I'm not easily offended by words, the whole situation doesn't "offend" me, it's more utter despair at the complete lack of respect shown by people than anything.

My original post came off the back of seeing the N word fired around for 15minutes in game with a lot of negative language associated with it. It's just unacceptable this day and age.

Reaper392 - I don't know what SMS is I'm afraid, so probably not me....

Welcome to the internet.

Just because people are on the internet, it doesn't (or at least shouldn't) give them carte blanche to act like a **** and abdicate themselves of all responsibility.

If a large majority of people debated in real life like they do on the internet they'd be forever recovering from slaps to the face.

I'm not a fan of 'Big Brother' censorship, rather prefer community censorship. If the community is crap (admins, disturbing ratio of trolls / normal people on server, no moderation / voting), then it's time to put up or pack up.

Already exists. I remember having to code text chat that would go through an online profanity filter. They sometimes lead to funny results :) Some TF2 servers do that.

Sure it shouldn't.
But this is the internet.
So it happens.
