I feel as though I really missed out here, my childhood was spent collecting the cards, yes, but never bothered with the games simply because I wasn't a gamer at that point.

Being a big fan of RPG's and stuff, I feel it's time. What is the best handheld or non handheld platform to play a pokemon game on, and what pokemon game?

Thanks!

+1 for crystal. it's basically the 4 previous base games in one.

but last one I happened to play was ruby, there have been like a dozen since then lol.

Get a GBA SP (plays all main pre-DS Pokemon games) and buy Leaf green. It the first game in the series but it's updated with better graphics and additional content. If you enjoy that look into the other GB/GBA games :).

Emulators are also pretty cool though i would presume that would be hush hush of course. One thing i think was a god send back when it first came out was the "Super GameBoy" for the SNES and Super Gameboy 2 (Japan only)

It was a large cartridge for the SNES that allowed you to play Gameboy games on your console, Super Gameboy 2 supported the smaller Advanced games. Back in the day playing Pokemon Red on a 28" CTR TV back in 1999 was great :D it doesn't quite beat been able to game on the go though but if you are at home and you wan't a bigger screen to play on it was a win win situations. I remember it been quite expensive though, hopefully if you choose to get one you may get a good deal

Are the new black/white not as good as the old ones then?

I personally think the earlier releases are better and are a better place to start from but if you only had a DSi or 3DS then I wouldn't persuade you to buy a GBA SP and not just get Black (2)/White (2) :p.

I would say yes however it may depend what you played first and what got you into the games. I would however highly recommend the SoulSilver and HeartGold remakes. Just like FireRed and LeafGreen they are remakes/updates and i had a lot of fun with them even if im not a huge fan of DS's personally. I also played Pokemon Platinum but i don't understand half of the Pokemon myself anymore past Emerald so that somewhat ruins it for me.

Ok ok, what is the differences between the different versions? Sounds like a lot of copy and pasting to me.

I would like to go back to the start sort of. Not the latest stuff. It's like Deus Ex... It's old but better than the new one haha. And now the PC gamers will be installing it.

So, I think the suggestion for Crystal sounds good.

But what handheld? What about the GB advance? I had one, I really liked the feel of it. The GB advance SP looks a little small...

Glad I still got mine, had it since I brought it on release for £30 back in the day :)

The early ones had exclusive Pokemon in each game so you could only get the full 150 if you traded.

I remember figuring out how to clone with a link cable and ending up with a set of 6 Mews. Completed the final mission on Yellow over and over with them :).

Thinking back, I sunk a lot of time into that game...

Unless you love non-backlit handhelds get the SP. I haven't foudnt he size a problem but I do have small hands :p. Leafgreen is the a remake of the first game so it's probably a good starting place. Emerald and Crystal are great games too though.

I'd remove that link by the way, it's piracy :p.

Get a GBA SP

if you ever do this, hunt out the backlit versions, I don't think they ever got released here but they are loads better than the standard frontlit version. they do exist, and I had both. Got ot be backlit

Ha! £80 for a backlit one, or £20 for a normal...

On ebay from a very quick search by the way.

I paid about £48 for a brand new backlit imported from Canada when they were released. People go on about new gen phone screens being better than last gen etc but the difference between these is huge.

Been looking at comparison videos and while I will agree with you, I don't feel it's something I will NEED to spend my money on.

However, I will probably be on it when I travel...

well if you could cope with the tiny screen, GB Micros are all backlit and cheap

Quick look and I don't think I could... Mind you, would be cool carrying that around on my key chain haha.
