CIT power supply exploded

The CIT lasted 5 minutes?!

Seriously though... It's not too much of an issue if you have a PSU which 'isnt the best' but is still solid (like an FSP for example), but there are some which are just a NO! Like CiT, Alpine, WinPower etc.

I had a 500W WinPower catch fire on me. There were plumes of smoke blowing out of the exhaust fan. I thought it best that I turned it off xD

No idea why it happened, it wasn't being strained at all. It was powering a Pentium D, 512MB of DDR2 and integrated video. The PC was plugged into a surge protector too.

Ive got a 350W FSP PSU in my mothers machine that has been working away quite happily for about 3 years :)

its only got an matx mobo, an i3 processor and an ssd on it :p

I have a 250W FSP that I use for testing WC loops and fans and things, it must be about 10 years old. It powered my Dads old PC for 7 years with no troubles.

My backup PSU for this PC is a 600W FSP as well :)
 
Looking for a micro atx power supply for my HTPC. Problem is, all I can find is CIT PSU's.

Can anyone suggest a good micro atx power supply, 450w or more?
 
I've had psu's from pretty reputable brands like Hiper and Jeantech that have stopped working and produced a burning smell. Never had one explode though.

I now use a Coolermaster and sleep soundly at night.
 
Used quite a few CiT PSU's and never had an issue, their not a top brand but not exactly bargain basement either, just cheap, you just have to bear that in mind when your setting the system up and don't ask more than the PSU is capable of, from the OP it sounds pretty much like you overloaded it. Remember that 500w is the total, the two 12v rails on a CiT 500w are rated at 168w and 156w respectively, its not really a surprise that Prime95 on an overclocked FX-8350 took it beyond what it could do, lesson learned.
 
I've put CIT PSU to one of my customer's PC 3 years ago.. so far so good, but he didn't use external graphic card, just built-into the motherboard and 2-cores CPU, so no big power draw was expected - it was a main reason why I did it :) I've opened it BTW and mounted Zener diode to make FAN quieter, so customer is still very happy. If he decided to upgrade, I'd never leave him with that PSU :)
 
I used a CIT psu in my machine for 2 years didn't have any problems with it.
Theres always going to be failures unfortunately when its a no name brand people jump on the bandwagon. But yes its always best to get a better PSU to regulate power and make sure your getting the efficiency
