Does anyone not have a smartphone by choice?

I only ask as I do not. I have had them in the past, but I seem to spend far too much time on the internet anyway and I just cannot stand being out with mates when people are checking their phones all night. I found that I was doing it myself so made the decision to go back to a normal phone. I can still get my emails on it but rarely check then when I am out. I don't really need one for work either and any work stuff I can solve by a good old chat.

A few of my friends and also my missus find it a bit odd, but when I am out socially, I want to socialise with the people around me, not people online. My bills are also minimal as I am on a rolling SIM only contract which costs me a tenner a month which it is impossible to go over.

So, I know I am in the minority, but does anyone else share my feelings, or am I just living in the past? :o

I currently have an S2, and I do love it, but I feel that I could be a lot more productive without it. When the contract expires, I will be going to a pay monthly contract, and if the phone has any resale value at the time, look into getting rid and just getting something a bit more basic with a better battery life.

how can you socialize if you're friends are with smart phones? :) how hard can it be to simply not look into a phone.. i know what you're talking about as my work colleague never lets hers out of her hands! and its annoying because mine sits in a pocket and is used only when i need it :)

I have a £17 pay as you go Nokia from Tesco's that I've had a few years now and it suits me fine.

Makes phone calls and does texts. No Camera, No Internet, No email, No games.

It costs me between £10 & £20 per year for calls.

I'm on o2 simplicity and don't have a smartphone. I don't plan on getting one either until I can get the same amount of minutes and texts as I do now, with unlimited browsing data for £15 a month. Will it happen soon? Probably not but I just can't justify spending silly amounts on a contract for the luxury of a smatphone as my phone curretly does everything I need it to.

Prefer the money to go on a good PC and solid internet connection to be honest.

I don't like being in a social situation when people have their phones out, I try very hard not to do it but it does happen.

Like my iphone far too much to give up though, only phone I've ever owned that actually works! (18 months of a 4 and it's pretty much like new)

That would be a bit too basic for my liking. It is handy to have the camera there for if you see anything while out and about, and are not lugging around a huge case full of photography equipment. Also access to emails is quite nice to have.

I could probably go without these on a new phone if I was stationed in an office all day rather than being out on the road. Our company issued us with some ancient Nokias with nothing apart from texts and calling functions. Cannot use them well at all, call volume too quiet, awkward little screen! GAH!

I have a smartphone because I like using it.

I don't do anything more than what I did on my old phone though...

No internet and such, unless I'm lost and I use the map.

My argument is when is it ever THAT important to get hold of someone by other means than a phone call. Even then when would someone actually need me for a life or death situation even with a phone call.

If you are really ill call a doctor or ambulance not a friend, if you are being robbed call the police, if you are on fire call the fire brigade. But I can't help you one jot with any of above.

Maybe if you need work to email you something, but otherwise I think smartphones are complete waste of money.

I grew up in an era when you used phoneboxes and we all lived to tell the tale.

I only have a work-issued BlackBerry. I do not have a smartphone. The only mobile I've owned in the last decade was one I was given (previous owner found it too complicated).

Could happily live without a smartphone; I only use a mobile as an emergency contact if I'm out & about.

I find them very useful. I don't need anything extravagant, my SIII mini does everything that I need from it. Emails, banking and internet are vital. News TV films Skype games etc etc are a bonus.

Because the rest of us have friends?

it does annoy me when people you are socialising with or talking to start to operate their smartphone at the same time as nodding along to you talking to them. Happens all to often too
