Pharming Infection

Try resetting IE back to defaults, tick all the boxes at the prompt (Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced).

Restart IE and disable third party browser extensions (tools -> internet options -> advanced -> scroll down and untick).

I'd probably format at this stage though if you're still having issues after throwing all of the above at it.
 
Some banking trojan is modifying the content of legit pages in real time. I would format.

Next time, keep your system up-to-date. Don't install Java if you don't need it. Spending £25 on AV is a waste and won't do anything to stop unknown threats.

norton is a virus. i used someone's machine once and their subscription had run out. i was using word but it kept prompting me to renew, totally ****ing with what i was trying to do. without admin rights i couldn't do anything to stop it. if that's not the very definition of a virus, i don't know what is. :mad:
 
Indeed....I will reformat.

I dont mind spending £25 on something like Norton....even if its not as effective as it could be....having free Antivirus clearly doesnt work.

I had to anyway, as I wanted to try all avenues before the last resort of formatting my PC, which is a right pain.
 
If neither MSE or Norton pick it up then why is Norton better? MSE is rated quite well and I've never had an issue.

You might want to consider installing rapport as that may stop this type of hijacking.
 
Norton, I always thought that was a virus... Since when it became anti-virus?

You need Kaspersky my man, get some of that Russian security on your PC.

But dont run Kaspersky with Norton together -.-.. You really dont want to try that, kaspersky declares thermo-nuclear war to Norton...
 
I would recommend Kaspersky or NOD32 for paid anti-virus ..... Norton is too much of a resource hog and its not great at the detection of new viruses.

ha....having those two pointed out to me is quite alarming!

I've been through every antivirus scan under the sun and nothing has picked any of that up!
 
So after fixing the above (removed proxy server and deleting URLREDIR)

And then running Combifix which deleted a few more files and dodgy registry files.

It seems to be all fixed now and it is no longer asking for me to input my full password.

it looks like the folder name containing the DLL was randomly named but it made no secret of what it was doing by the filename. i could have missed it had it used something less obvious. and nothing noticed the proxy settings being set to localhost? there is genuine software out there that might require this but you'd think any competent scanner would pick this up and ask you.

i usually get loads of abuse when i mention i run no AV which is why i keep it to myself these days but on this occasion, i'm proud to say it. :D

edit: i just ran hijackthis on my pc and it turns out the URLREDIR.DLL filename and BHO can be legit. obviously the difference is the foldername. this is how it appears for me.

Honestly you're much better off without Java installed, Flash too if you can get away with it. I haven't had the JRE installed for the past couple of years and haven't been asked for it either.

i have it installed because i have some standalone .jar files i haven't found replacements for.

and the latest versions now prompt you if you encounter it in your browser. of course some people will blindly accept these but you can't really account for that.
